Phlegm stuck in throat

I've been sick (cold). And at night, I get these phlegm stuck in my throat. A little in my airway too. Making it harder than normal to breathe. And now this lump of phlegm is stuck in my throat, again. Any way I can get it out?

Either hack it up (Painful) and start coughing like heck, or just drink LOTS of water.

Actually, drinking water doesn't really help. All it does is get you full and make you throw up. First you try hacking it up. then when a little piece of the phlegm gets out of the throat into your mouth, use your tongue to kind of pull it out o_o

Any kind of spicy food will loosen it up, habanero's do the job for me.

Have you tried salt water? Swish and spit type thing? Sometimes it breaks down the phlem and makes it easier to hack up. It also takes some of the soreness aching away.
