PositiveFBSo i know you're supposed to let your muscles recover and heal when you work out so you should work out each muscle only every 2-3 days. However, the only workout I do on my upper body is a 100 pushups a night. 5 sets of 20. Now a 100 pushups is pretty difficult to me cause im weaksauce. i can definitely feel it in my arms the next day. should I rest my arms? or just keep doing pushups everyday? I dont care as much about how my muscles look as I do about getting stronger. my friend does 100 pushups a day and he seems to be having success so I'm curious as to what I should do

AnasF
Franky : You guys are monsters. I can barely do 25 a day
You are a woman. Anyhow, rest and healing is very important. I suggest 12 hours of sleep a night, 6 meals a day (50% carbs, 30% protein, 20% fat, 2/3 the size of what you'd eat if you ate 3 meals a day), and yes, skipping every second day is very good, unless you have really good recovery.

You must take a rest. Muscle building is about tearing the muscles, and then letting them grow back stronger. You need to give em a chance, meng. -- It's fine to start low. check this out : http://hundredpushups.com/ http://www.twohundredsitups.com/

Look, I work at the airport handling hundreds of 40+ pound bags a day, and my muscles never feel sore the next day. Why? Its because I stretch my muscles before, and after Im done lifting the bags. PLUS, during this, I am also drinking a lot of water during it (Around a litre of water every 1-2 hours). The reason your muscles are sore the next day, is because your body cant supply them with enough fluids to stay "loose". Example, if you keep an elastic band in a nice room with decent moisture in it, it will continue to stay elastic, if its in a warm place with no moisture, it will loose its snap quicker. Same thing for your muscles, you need to keep them lubricated as much as you can in order for them to not have that much damage to them done. Just try it out, try working out without drinking lots of water, then working out and drinking lots of water, you will see a huge difference in the amount of soreness, pain, and amount of movement they can do the next day compared to not drinking water to drinking water

The strain is from micro-tears. That's how you build muscle - tear them by working them, then they build back bigger. Essentially that's all there is to it, and its usually sore-est around 2-3 days after excercise. It essentially feels like flu sores, because that's more or less what it is: injured muscle. I think the general consensus is that you don't need to rest them, there's no damage whatsoever. People say that if you're training everyday your gains (in relation to amount you lift) will be less than if you train 2-3 times a week but so what? You're still doing alot more excercise by doing it everyday. So you can rest it if you want to but there's no need to. Also, ninja's right to a certain extent. Stretching and loads of fluids does help (so does protein and GOOD nutrition, not that artificial protein shake crap), but its not the main thing.

You should always take rest days. That being said, Push Ups tend to work your chest and triceps the most. Bench pressing is a lot better for those two areas if you are trying to build upper body strength. Actually, Bench Pressing is the best upper body exercise that you can do.
