Since there are so many religious threads I thought I'd contribute! This is just a rant by the way (or something like a rant). Not flame-baiting and please keep your insults to yourself. Also, this is just how I feel about my religious parents and I'm not trying to offend anyone at all. Alright! So I live with my religious parents whom make it hard for me to share my opinions with. For the most part, religion is one factor why I don't get along with them either. My dad for one, is what I like to call a "super-jew" because he always attends the synagogue (temple, whatever you want to call it) and forces his beliefs on me. He also keeps kosher (for the most part). Moreover my mom and dad both always tell me how important it is to marry a Jewish man and uphold the Jewish roots (blah blah blah) and that Jewish people are "the chosen people" (yada yada yada). There's no way in heck that I believe any of the above mentioned items and it drives me crazy every time they force their ideologies on me. I mean, there's only so much one can take when it comes to shoving your beliefs down a person's throat, right? I mean it gets so frustrating always listening to them telling me what I should do (because I'm supposed to be a good Jew) so I never bother with any of it. In fact, I don't even believe in the Jewish religion and find most religions to be the exact same (restricting and nonsensical for the most part). So my question is: Those who aren't religious but live with their religious parents, do they force their ideologies onto you? Does it also frustrate you? Share your thoughts!

My parents are Jewish too (reform), but they don't keep kosher because it's too much of a hassle :P. Both of my parents were raised in conservative orthodox/conservative households, so I'm very glad to have my parents be fairly laid back. I've told my parents I'm bi and my mom knows my brother and I are atheist. She still loves me as much as when I was 5 haha. With that said, sorry for your dilemma. Wish your parents were more laid back :/.
xBigBang : Yes, my friend won a stuffed tiger for me. It was like 50" and I really liked it but my mom threw it away cause if we have a tiger in the house, it means we're more ferocious and evil then the tiger. She threw it away. :'( And.. uh also I have to marry a chinese person. They hate all other races.
Wait, explain the tiger thing to me O_O
JoeyBartez : Parents should try to raise their kids the way they think that they should. That does involve presenting the kids with their ideologies. Obviously, the parents needs to be able to explain their thinking to their child and be able to defend their arguments. I think that's fine. But if people say "BELIEVE OR I DISOWN YOU" then that's forcing for no reason, encouraging people not to think for themselves, etc. That is not good parenting, and I think it would be very frustrating.
You're right about the whole raising kids and presenting their ideologies. But I'm 20. I'm not a kid and they never raised me or my sister in a religious way. They're only bringing it up now because they want me to marry a Jew.
shiv668 : Ok this is what you do. Do what you parents say till you get a job and ur own place. Dont do it before college(if your going to one) cause you need ur parents to fund it). after your living by urself then tell them your going ot be atheist or budhist or etc. It wont matter if they disown you cause you have ur own life and get to marry who ever you want
They don't fund for my university education, I took out a loan. I am planning to move out after I graduate (in about 1.5 years). I do stuff behind their back though.
xBigBang : Yes, my friend won a stuffed tiger for me.
monkeykid3ish : Do your parents know your bi? My parents found out i was bi and know im living at my friends.
No. My mom knows my sister is but she doesn't know that I am because I never let it slip. If my dad knew...well I wouldn't want to imagine what would happen. EDIT: At HangingOn: My mom is a smidge more laid back than my dad because she doesn't mind who I date. But honestly, just can't wait to get out of here. :P

As a religious woman; I believe that your relationship with God is your own. While informing and talking about religion and beliefs can be misconstrued as "forcing," to most non religious people, just take it for face value. What your parents know is what makes them happy. And all they are trying to do is bring happiness in to your life. Among other things. Don't take it as a bad thing. Just let them know that religion is personal, between yourself and your creator. They should be able to respect that. Also.. they probably treat you like a child, because you act like one. Going "behind their back" to do the things you want to do is extremely immature. Just be an adult.

Call me immature, I don't care, but there are some things I want to enjoy that I can't so I do it without them knowing.

That's the beauty of being an adult. The moment you realize that, things will be much simpler for you. I was there once. Living with my parents, at 20. They treated me like a child, until I started acting like an adult. Just offering a little advice. Take it how you want.

I've tried talking to my parents about my religious views, believe me, they don't respect my choices. If I don't believe in Judaism and have my own believes in a higher power it's considered wrong. My parents are very narrow minded. At Zach: Thanks for the comforting words :P Eh, every religious person is different, some more restricting than others. One day you can move out and live freely yourself!

You shouldn't be forced to follow their religion and shouldn't listen to them on stuff you don't agree about. You don't pick your parents. They don't even pick you.
