Study: How do you understand a concept rather than memorise?

A very abstract question which I feel should be answered.

Depends what it is. In math for example, we had to remember trig identities, but our teacher showed us how we could just memorize one, and from that, we could move the identity around to get all the others. Or in something like bio, where you have to remember the family, group, etc., like what order it all gets more specific in, you can take the first letter of each word and make a sentence by replacing the first letters with words to... make a sentence (that was worded terribly, sorry). Uhh, in Spanish or English with vocab, you can sometimes remember what the word is close to. Like if it comes from the same root as another word.

My teacher always said "It's one thing to read something, but it takes an intelligent student to understand it" Anyways, since i don't study, he makes me. He makes me first, understand something by like reading it or doing something. Then, i need to explain it to someone.
