5 reasons not to support the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games. Reason 1. Fascism / colonialism The Olympics have a long history of racism, from its first founding members such as Pierre de Coubertin, a French Baron who advocated sports to strengthen colonialism, to recent Olympic committee presidents. The 1936 Olympics in Berlin empowered the Nazi regime of Hitler. In 1968, in the Olympic Games in Mexico City, there was a massacre of 300 student protesters by soldiers just days before the Olympic Games began. Another well-known president of IOC (international Olympic committee) was fascist Juan Antonio Samaranch (IOC president from 1980-2001), a former government official in Franco's fascist regime in Spain. Reason 2. Public debt VANOC and government officials have claimed that the 2010 games would cost approximately $ 2 billion. But that amount did not include the expansion of the Sea-to-Sky highway, the Canada Line Skytrain to the airport, the Vancouver Convention Center, or the lower mainland Gateway Project. This makes the games cost about $ 6 billion, this debt will have to be paid off by the people. This money could have been spent on social services, housing, drug treatment, health care, etc... *Note : Since the start of the Olympics, taxes in Vancouver have tripled. The profits that all the big companies make who sponsor the Olympics will not pay off the 6billion dollar debt, which continues to rise. Reason 3. Homeless / criminalization of the poor Since winning the 2010 Games in 2003, homelessness has increased from 1,000 to over 3,700. Since the 1980s the Olympic Games have displaced more than 2 million people (Fair Play for Housing Rights report, 2007). In Seoul 1988, some 750,000 poor were displaced, in Atlanta 1996, over 30,000, and for Beijing in 2008, an estimated 1.5 million have been displaced. To "cleanse" the poor, the cities hosting the Olympics began a systematic campaign to criminalize the poor. In Vancouver, the city has launched Project Civil City and new laws to criminalize begging for money, sleeping outdoors, etc... It has also included hundreds of thousands of dollars for increased private security (i.e., the Downtown Ambassadors). New garbage canisters on streets make it more difficult for the poor to gather recyclables, and new benches make it impossible to lay down. These measures fit with government plans to remove poor downtown residents to mental institutions, �detox centers� on former military bases, and the �fly-back� scheme by police to return persons wanted on warrants in other provinces. This is nothing less than a process of social cleansing! *Note : Vancouver has become an occupied police state and over $380,000 ( I think, defiantly not less) has been spent on video surveillance and police just to stop 2010 Olympic protesters and homelessness. Get out of here. This is all bullsh t. Obviously lots had to have been done for the olympics. Good and bad things had have had to happen. If you cannot live with "life" then why live at all? EDIT: And yeah, Obviously I will still support it, Its great entertainment.
