I currently doing a research project for my english class. I want to know how GAMERS WHO CLEARLY SEEM TO BENEFIT FROM GAMING IN THEIR LITERACY. If you fall under that: please give example and explain how you got benefit from gaming. If anyone disagree about that, feel free to join the disscussion! Thanks for the help

I think you should pick a new topic. There really isn't a way to prove such a statement with your limited resources.

I learned to read by playing donkey kong 64! I was fed up with not being able to read the text on screen. So in a way, it acted as my motivation for reading. Edit: Not to mention pokemon :P Most of my friends' parents would tell my parents, they should put "limits" on me. Yet, that also contributed to my reading ability. Not to mention spelling! Since my first video game, I've been great at spelling, with some awards from Bees to prove it. I definitely believe gaming will benefit you with at LEAST literacy. Good luck with your project!

One of my best friends was pretty bad with English when he first started playing MS and 4 years later he writes and types much more proficiently.

Uh I would choose a different study. Your results will be erratic and all over the place... Yes, people who play Maplestory tend to show illiteracy, but it is full of people who are literate and it is a game...People don't talk formally or professionally. I mean I, for one, don't. In game, people aren't going to spell out "laugh out loud" or "rolling on the floor" If anything, gaming promotes laziness? 0.0

I see the irony of having bad grammar on a topic about a project for your English class. OT: First argument: Many games, such as RPG games, require the player to read in order to know the story and/or advance in the game. If they HAVE to read, then, the'll be more inclined to get better at reading just like the second person who answered this thread. Second argument: People whose first language is not English, will learn or greatly improve their English because of a game. I know many people who, 4 years ago, asked me to be their translator; now they are proficient enough to hold an intelligent conversation with individuals who only speak English. Final argument: By simply reading, you can (and will) improve your grammar and spelling. Practice makes perfect

Depending on what kind of game you played, an individual can certainly benefit a lot in education through gaming. My personal experience with this was when I first started playing mmorpgs, by playing and trying to figure storylines or meanings, I've gradually built up my vocabulary and learned proper grammar/sentence structures while also had a lot of fun as well.

I think that a game can help improve your literacy rate including your typing abilities. I have been able to learn where every key is on a keyboard without looking at it anymore because of maplestory. How often do I find myself, and I'm sure others too, in the heat of battle and conversing with friends at the same time. I solo himes and still talk with guild mates in a proficency (sp check lol) where the himes dont kill me. As far as reading goes, I don't read story line in maple anymore. But my reading ability has always been high to begin with.

No problem :P There are others who will have similar stories too, I guarantee it MMORPGS are maybe not the best place to look for this topic, but when it comes to gaming in general, you should be able to find some great resources/people.

It does help but at the same time gives you some really bad habits. For example, with all the "LOL, OMFG, G....TFO, FTW, AFK, ROFL, ROFLMFAO, NM" and all the other different acronyms, it can mess up so social dialogs. But playing video games has helped me improve my English a lot, especially since I'm French and I only started typing and reading in english when I started playing video games and I would say MapleStory has helped me a lot. I've been playing since the beginning and I have improve so much the way I express myself and I think this should be an aspect reconized by parents or teachers or any adults who are agaisnt video games.
