mrbasilGreetings Basilers! Some of you may have read about the upcoming changes to the guide system. If you haven't, the guides will be getting a whack-load of new features. These features will make their guides much more powerful and informative. Things you should know • Tags will NOT work in the forum or anywhere else. • Reading guides now takes place separate from the forums. Guides will still be linked from the /show/forum pages, but when you read a guide or comment on it, it won't happen on the forums. • The new tag system is called 'Tofu', inspired by the squishy ingredient. Tofu tags are simple yet powerful. • Learn about the new tags here . This page includes all the info you need, including a template guide you can use. • Tofu tags can now be used on Basil scraps as well. This means you can have more powerful scraps and/or test out your guides before you submit them/updates to the site. • Guides can be much longer than previously. Important notes to guide writers If you're a guide writer, your guide was migrated to the new system. Make sure to not edit the guide in the forums! Follow these steps: • Goto your BasilID, look for 'guides' on the BasilID menu bar, click it • Find your guide, click the entry. • This is how your guide currently looks. • Click the big 'edit' button, find your guide text, select it all, copy it, save it on your hard drive and move it to a safe place. • Copy the guide to a new file and begin converting it • Make sure to remove all unecessary text/notes (update log, credits, links to your other guides, etc) • Do not use the guide in the forums, it will not be accepted, use the guide that is on the page accessed via the instructions above. • Nobody can see this guide in the new system but you and I. This gives you some time to update your guide before it becomes public. • As the thread title says this is currently in Beta, so if you see something strange happen, don't worry, it'll be fixed. Crediting contributors In my opinion it's important to credit contributors to guides and we've made it easier to do so. While looking at your guide, click on the 'Last updated.... >>' text to be taken to the updates page. There you can add an update note. Make sure to credit people who help, they will show up as a contributor. This encourages people to help out and will make your guide even better! Find any bugs? Tell us below. The new guides and the ability to submit your updated guides will be live when it's ready. Thanks!

I take it since mr.b has labelled this feature after a food item that this may be a recurring them in things to come? me-thinks its time to re-introduce the warrior recipes thread. Just noticed that this system works for scraps too, so its for everyone, not just guide writers Thankyou mr.b for the new system!

@Mr. Basil: You need to be more active on the forums... Nothing shows bad administration like the one and only administrator not contributing to the community. On the other hand, nice job with the tags. Though, you'd think the image tag would create some problems?

[/quote] Just putting it out there: you see all those screenshots accepted? you see people's avatars getting approved? you see numerous updates like this happening all the time? Mr.B puts alot of work into this site and beleive it or not the moderators have informed us he does indeed have a life. Its also rumoured he holds down a steady job.

mrbasil@machina: really? "not contributing to the community?" i just spent the last 5+ years working on this site, not to mention cooking up the latest doohickies... i wish i had more time. i've been working so hard on this new guide system that i've only just today had a chance to check out neo city. :| anyway, back on topic.

mrbasil@vusys: what do you mean and why?

You should cache the parsed guide the first time it's loaded, then require() it every time after to save having to pull the data out the db and parse it every time, which will be a strain on long guides.

mrbasil 02/25/10 + PM | QUOTE | PERMALINK | REPORT
mrbasil@vusys: they're not that long. i imagine any benefits gained from caching would be negated by the overhead from checking whether the cached file exists (hard drive read) and then including it. tho i will keep this in mind if the need arises. thanks

I like this idea . Sounds like it will be really helpful. Though you do seem to love the food/restaurant theme :-p, I must say.
