Just FYI, it's incredibly hard to create a completely new game engine with gamemaker. Even with a team of four or five people, it takes months to create a game. If you're going for an 8-bit style game, go to the gang garrison forums. (google it; I can't post links) They've created a very stable side-scrolling 8 bit multiplayer game, and you'll probably the engine that you need there.

EtokapaI used to use GM, it was a really fun experience and challenge to move from pre-set actions to all out coding things line by line - debugging, testing, and getting friends to test it. It all comes down to how complicated you want to make it. Like, want to make an MMO? It's certainly possible and has been done, but it's extremely difficult. It also depends on how much time you have on your hands and if you can keep your sanity in check. Have you thought of trying to use RPGMaker? That might be better suited for you instead of trying to build an engine from scratch. (I'd show you some of the weird things I've made, but people are usually weary of .exe files...)
this isnt true, if you really need help look at the gamemaker forums. start with D&D, look at lots of tutorials, and look at other peoples game engines and work yourself up from there.

It's so amateur-ish. Nearly impossible to use. I've taken 2 computer game making classes and they both used game maker but the games I made with full instructions was pretty much a worse version of Pac Man.

I use Gamemaker when im bored. I made a game showing Frank, jumping around in a forest, avoiding flames and stuff Its pretty fun, and i added the music from Phantom Forest. Love that theme. ;) Its indeed very hard to create a whole game with GM. You would have to learn to write GML, ortherwise its gonna take a whole long time. But still, its worth a try
Sorry; the game I was referring to was a multiplayer side scrolling shooter game, so obviously if you want to create a simple game then it's not going to take as long or be nearly as hard to make. But then again it's all based on what your standard is. If you want to create the PC equivalent of the Atari's ET, its up to you.

I've only made side-scrollers and top-down shooters using GM (But it had multiplayer! XD) An RPG looked like too much of an effort to make.
