Herro thare. Peter Chao hare. Anyway, it's the last day of break and I've finally decided to start my homework. Here's the question: Choose two controversial presidential appointments and explain why the senate was criticized for them.

It ended with Adams being elected and Henry Clay (the one who decided the outcome) getting a high ranking position (I think it was Secretary of State). There was talk of a "Corrupt bargain" 2. It was a tie (not exactly, but consider it that way) between the two candidates, and some states had uneven outcomes. This led to the Compromise of 1877, where some judges, Senators and House members (9 of them) would count the votes. Since 5 were Republicans and 4 Democrats, Hayes would have beat the Democratic Tilden. The agreement, however, gave the presidency to Hayes in exchange to the end of Reconstruction.
