|
Sharpie : This quote has been answered time and time again..
Yes, but it involves either an unloving God that wants to educate us through suffering or a non-omnipotent God that can't tell what "fruits" each creation will bear. Either way, God is reduced from an all-mighty and benevolent figure to just a futile pipe-dream. |

| "I had always heard your entire life flashes in front of your eyes the second before you die. First of all, that one second isn't a second at all, it stretches on forever, like an ocean of time. For me, it was lying on my back at Boy Scout camp, watching falling stars. And yellow leaves, from the maple trees, that lined my street.. Or my grandmother's hands, and the way her skin seemed like paper.. And the first time I saw my cousin Tony's brand new Firebird.. And Janie.. And Janie.. And Carolyn. I guess I could be pretty pissed off about what happened to me. But its hard to stay mad, when there's so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I'm seeing it all at once, and it's too much, my heart fills up like a balloon that's about to burst. And then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold onto it, and then it flows through me like rain and I can't feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life.. You have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sure. But don't worry.. You will someday." |

Either way, God is reduced from an all-mighty and benevolent figure to just a futile pipe-dream.
Well that's false dichotomy if I've ever seen it. To think that there are only two possible motives behind the actions of an omniscient, omnipotent being, and that you, a decidedly imperfect being could decipher these two motives is just a little pretentious, don't you think? But I guess even considering the possibility that an ascended being with omnipotence might have just a tad more insight than you or I would be ridiculous, so, carry on. Not that I'm directly saying "you are wrong". Just that the logic you use to support your beliefs is slightly flawed. I'd rather not get into a (Christianity-based) theological discussion on the various impacts of sin and free will upon the human race because the audience would likely unreceptive, it requires more exposition than I care to give (or am capable of giving, seeing as my study of history and religion is at best limited to basic supplementary knowledge) without being ostensibly based on a great deal of supposition, and I lack the interest or attention span to carry out such a debate to fruition. |

|
ricerush : "The first rule of fight club is: you do not talk about fight club. The second rule of fight club is: YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB!" -Fight Club "I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?" - Dirty Harry
THEIF! |

To think that there are only two possible motives behind the actions of an omniscient, omnipotent being, and that you, a decidedly imperfect being could decipher these two motives is just a little pretentious, don't you think?
It isn't a false dichotomy because all the other alternatives are addressed by the original quote.
Visionary : But I guess even considering the possibility that an ascended being with omnipotence might have just a tad more insight than you or I would be ridiculous, so, carry on.
No, because if the "insight" of this so-called creator involves the mass-murder and suffering of my race, then I call into question what we can do on the grounds of "insight".
Visionary : Not that I'm directly saying "you are wrong". Just that the logic you use to support your beliefs is slightly flawed.
