Great, XP antivirus 2010 infection

So, I knew this would happen... my dad leaves out an internet protection on the home PC, and bam a virus. But I think I can manually take down this one. It's a rogue software mentioned above in my title. I found about 6 sites that might help me, but I am always overcautious due to the fact that I know how to work computers, but I couldn't fix them for a living you know? So, I already ended the process in the task bar (av.exe), but now I am prepared to remove it fully from my pc. I made this thread to see if people agree with this website's comment which I am about to link up, and if anyone else has had or has this virus and can successfully show me the BEST way to get rid of it. Here's the link (link removed because someone complained, I honestly didn't know it had problems, chill.) and remember, this is the link which in the comments, some guy put a way to get rid of. Tell me if you agree. Also, I went to run malwarebytes, but this virus won't let me open it. Thank goodness this PC has more than one login, because I can't even get on the internet with that virus! So, let me know what you think, and thanks a bunch in advance.

Don't trust that site: I use Web of Trust and it's got a poor reputation in all categories.

google combofix.exe. It should come from a bleeping computer site. This should get it. If not, google smitrem. I just used combofix last weekend though to get rid on it on another computer.

This is not a virus. It's spyware, and this certain kind is sometimes called "scareware". Spyware with the very same name, XP antivirus 2010, has gotten onto my laptop twice in the last three days. The best thing to do is use ComboFix. It really helps. However, don't use it for EVERYthing you might get in the future, and try to back up important files if the spyware will let you. It's a powerful program and not meant to be used with everything. In this case, go for it; I tested it myself with this same infection.

For the older version of the 'XP Anti-Virus Virus' I used MalwareBytes (Google it and download from Cnet or something). It wont let you download it unless you go to safe mode and download it from there.

check task manager for av.exe if you see it, close it now, continue removal with mbam

Well, I guess I'll try combo fix, should I run it off of the other user? That's what I'm on right now, the non infected user on this PC. Bleepingcomputers says to post the log when it's done.. I don't want to have to go through that.

I once had the 2009 virus, I just scanned with SUPER antivirus and Malwarebytes in safe mode, and then in normal and it should be fixed then.

[/quote] dont use combo fix without the help of someone who knows exactly how to use it, in the end it could end up causing more problems if you use it without knowing what your doing, also, there is a certain reg edit you need to do to disable the mbam redirect to av.exe
