Earlier today I was browsing around Basil and in a topic I saw a perma-beginner post something interesting. He said that Beginners have a different defense formula than people with jobs. This got me curious, and now I have a few questions. Is this true? And if so, is the a link to somewhere I can see where you got your proof? How much is the difference? Are there any formulas I can see for defense for people with jobs compared to people without? I mean, I've always wanted a perma-beginner, but I've never had the drive to level one. If this turns out to be true, then this would be just the gimmick that would drive me to level me beginner. Like by showing off how little damage I can make monsters do to me :D

No there isn't. It is just that our primary focus is around defense so our base equips create a "formula" being a set of must have def items to get. But I am just pulling stuff out of my ass, but I know for a fact there is no formula.

I have never seen any formula either. I've only heard from everyone else that our "formula" is better. The only reason I believe this is that I get hit with 1 damage from most of the non-magical attacking monsters while my 4th job friends get hit with 50-100 damage.

OK.....I always thought there was a better formula for beginners.....but...after hearing Mr. TheSundayBest and Miss Alyssaur's opinions...i decided to put it to the test. I did a defense experiment video. Since I don't have enough...err...w/e it is to post URL's...I'll just tell you how to navigate to it on YouTube. My channel is TLK013...the video is "Maple Story Beginner Defense Formula?" it should be up now. To be honest..I didn't expect the results.

I dunno what to say to this... My beginner def takes less damage than any of my jobbies but it could be because of what tlk says. don't mages have pretty good physical def too? @ sundaybest. I would NEVER base my equips on ANY character on Def so thats not it at all.

GunDelHelBased on a test I did last week with a Crusader friend (level 80)--we take roughly half the damage of jobbed characters with around the same defense and around the same level. Lv 80 Sader with 128 Defense (No PG) took 240~280ish damage from Skeleton Soldiers and Officer Skeletons. Lv 83 Noblesse With 126 Defense took 120~150ish damage from Skeleton Soldiers and Officer Skeletons. I had heard about this sometime around the time the Defense formula was changed for EVERYONE (if any of you can remember that far back)--and If I can remember correctly, Keeth was the first person to really notice "Hey...Am I taking less damage than that guy?". For me--I didn't really notice it until I first put on my Z-helm and began to take 1 damage constantly and consistently from pretty much all of my training spots. With my hefty amount of defense (465 with full set of def equips equipped), I take literally 1 damage from everything on Victoria--with the exception of things like Tauromacis and Taurospears. Even my last training spot, Wind Raiders, could only do about 240~280 on me. The big kicker is Lord Pirate. I'm a huge fan of PPQ and am constantly ragging on my buddies to come and PQ with me. Well, I'm taking 1 damage from everything on deck, and then when I finally get to Lord Pirate he's doing anywhere from 30 to 60 touch damage to me. So the other day, my wife decided to give me a few Witches Stews--so I could play around with the defense formula--and pictures speak a thousand words. http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/5904/maple0020p.jpg Edit: Also, that was probably me--I love my defense. Just call me Brick. Edit of an edit: I believe it's of BIG importance that your level is somehow involved in all of this--as I see absolutely no defense comparisons between myself and Mages my level with the same defense and HP.

@TLK I have another thing for you to test. See if a Level 10 beginner or a lvl 6x beginner takes more damage from a monster. If it was the HP thing you said, the lvl 10 should take less dmg

GunDelHelDid a quick test at Wind Raiders with a Priest friend of mine. Her at 314 Defense, me at 317 defense. She took 550~600 damage (buffless) from touch, and I took 450~480. I then put on an Emergency rescue tube to see if HP effected damage at all--and I saw no difference. Edit: Other test recollections 16X I/L with comparable defense took 1.5k~1.6k from Himes, 8X Noblesse took the 1.38k~1.45k Also, Bigfoot hits 11k regardless--so at some point the defense calculations don't care what you are. That or the enemy's level is part of the formula.

I really wanna know whether or not beginners DO have a better formula...I may try and get a friend to read into the game files and find out... >.> but that may take forever..... If you tested it and a mage of equal level, hp and def takes more damage than a beginner...I think it's safe to say that hp has little to do with the damage taken... But I'm still going to try one more thing (or you could) to rule out HP once and for all. I'll get a character and up his hp only with equips and keep his def the same and compare. I think steph has a 120 hp shield and nibbles has a 90 hp wg....that with am er tube and vic explorer medal is 485 more hp (1.5x my normal...) oh well~ we'll see~ Edit: If there is a better formula for beginners...I think it only applies to weapon attacks, not magical attacks. It's been my experience playing that i take roughly to same magical attack damage as other players with the same magical defense.

I thought it was always about our weapon defense anyway. I've never seen anyone speak about our magical defense.
