Hello peeps, I have had the distinct pleasure to attend the 2010 Lorne Genome Conference, where 300 of the brightest minds in the field from Australia and overseas get together to share in ground breaking discoveries. One of which included a very promising anti-HIV drug (using Zinc-finger repeats) which has been approved for human trials. Anyway, the purpose of this thread is to share a little something which usually gets quite a bit of attention here. One of the sessions was on "Comparative & Evolutionary Genomics". Now for those of you who have never been to such a conference I will give you a bit of an overview of what happens. Science is a very competitive field, with many groups working on similar topics. Because of this it is in the best interest of the presenter to cover all bases in terms of validating his/hers research. Because if they don't they will be literary executed by their peers during the Q and A session. Almost of every aspect of each presentation was scrutinised, except for one. While every single talk in the session was based on evolution, not a single one of them a) presented evidence b) was questioned about a lack of evidence in the area. Why, because the brightest minds in the field all agree that the process of evolution is not up for debate. Now I don't want to get into a debate about religion, deity and God because heck everyone is entitled to their beliefs right. My point is that if at the core of your faith is the denial of evolution then I urge you to reconsider your stance. I understand that there is no right or wrong in terms of religious beliefs (because most of it can not be scientifically tested and relies entirely in faith), however if that belief does extend to rejecting evolution, well then quite simply put: You are wrong.

I approve. Edit (so mods don't go all Y U NO CONTRIBUT and then ban me): Evolution is not only empirically proven, but it's also perfectly logical. The best of any kind will be more likely to reproduce so the new, superior species branches off and fights the old species for dominance. The new one usually wins, and that's how we have our progression of species over the years. It makes absolutely perfect sense.

I don't get why people feel the need to broadcast their opinions. I understand you believe beyond a shadow of a doubt you're right and that's fine, but why would you intentionally try and make someone feel differently about their beliefs? Do you want them to be unhappy? Do you feel the need to feel superior? Do you use the "I'm enlightening them" excuse as a guise to do anything I just mentioned? I'd rather be happy and ignorant (though I'm not; I fully acknowledge evolution but I continue believing as I don't see conflict). Why is it so wrong to want to be happy? Even at the cost of intelligence? Reminds me of that episode of Spongebob. Patrick has the brain coral but he chooses to give it up for his friendship with Spongebob. If you're striving for the betterment of mankind, you're certainly going the wrong direction.

Secondly, I see very few source of happiness that outrank the joy I get from education and educating others. So I am exercising my right to do so.

aznsealA common misconception is that Christianity denies evolution. Many Christians believe and acknowledge evolution exists. The debate is whether it's the origin of life or not. Some other Christians also think Genesis should be taken metaphorically because even though it says "7 days", God doesn't run on time so it can mean something else.

I've had multiple Christian friends who believe in evolution, even though they still think God's the reason for it. And, the whole bible is filled with metaphors. They're just stories to tell people how to live their lives.

However this is aimed towards the countless of debate into whether or not evolution is a real phenomena or not.

Science is wrong. I mean, look at me. I'm a cat, a duck, and a bunny. They are clearly from difference species, yet somehow they had me (let's ignore the three way fertilization)! Explain that one, Dr.Dimo. And no, I'm not sterile...

I acted as if I was referring to the people you're trying to reach. Does their happiness not matter?
