Why do merchants dress the way they do?

Hi guys, I've always been wondering. Why do a large population of merchants always wear the usual pro and expensive attire? It makes it clearly obvious that they're going to try to merchant you. I'm personally a merchant, but I only simply wear my normal clothes, to avoid detection. So basil, why do merchants dress the way they do?

I realize it's to show off, but it's pretty plain obvious that their merchants, so most common sense people would avoid them.
