I mean, imagine that. It's like one day, a random guy get s pissed off and goes, "GRAHHHH! I'M SO ANGRY, I'LL... I'LL... *sticks up middle finger*"

During a war between England and France, the English cut the middle fingers off of French archers and when the Englishmen put their middle fingers up to the French, it was an insult because the Englishmen still had their middle fingers, while the Frenchmen didn't. I might have mixed it up a little, but that's the general story.

In the old days, archers used the middle finger to fire arrows and when they were captured by the enemy, they would cut that finger. Uncaptured archers would do the middle finger to show that they can fire arrows... or something like that.

Archers who failed in battle would often be punished by having their middle finger severed. Raising your middle finger to the enemy basicly says "Look what I have... and what you're not going to."

In WW1, it was used to taunt the Germans. This was because the middle finger is used to pull the trigger on a gun, and American POWs would have theirs cut off by German soldiers so that they could not effectively fight. So during a battle, American soldiers would raise their middle finger to basically say "come and get it".
