The great pizza debate of 2010

So I got into a really big debate about pizza with one of my guildies. He (lets call him Pizza Face) said that toppings are just decorations on a pizza and that all you need is bread and sauce. My response to this outrage was quite lengthy, but it was somewhere along the lines of "You say what now?" To me, bread with sauce is....well just bread with sauce. In my opinion you need some kind of topping to make it into a pizza no matter how simple (Pizza Face counted cheese as a topping meaning he does not like cheese on his pizza). Discuss.

He's wrong wrong wrong. Plain pizza with just sauce on the pizza base is disgusting. You need lots of cheese and toppings for a pizza to really be a pizza.

I believe that the fundamentals from which society is built upon is conforming to fit basic necessities first before luxuries, and the bread and sauce combination fulfill it thusly with a crust (Bread) and filling (sauce.) They didn't always have the luxury of meat or cheese to put onto a pizza in Italy. Technically, he's right. But, honestly, I would prefer toppings on my pizza (Pepperoni and Bell Peppers FTW!)

[/quote] What you fail to realize is that only Americans have coined the term "Pies" and that we only use it when referring to chicago style pizza, otherwise reffered to as deep-dish pizza. So yes, if you are talking about deep dish pizza then only bread and sauce would be acceptable. However, you should also realize that the toppings go on the bottom most layers in a deep dish pizza so that it goes Crust, Toppings, and then sauce. If you look back to Pizza's origins, you would see that cheese is always a staple ingredient since the art of cheese making and raising cows/sheep/goats go way way back to the very beginnings of society in Europe and Asia.
