How can I ask a girl out without making it seem awkward?

This girl's been in my school since the 6th grade(I'm in the 11th grade now), but we don't really know each other that well. She's in a few of my classes, and I've just now developed feelings for her. We know each other's names, but I've never talked to her or any of her friends. I just feel like it'll be awkward if I decide to ask her out even though she barely knows me. On the other hand I don't want to be friends with her, and lead her down the wrong path. I have a feeling if I go up to her and say "Wanna go to the movies on friday?" she'll probably stare at me and then walk away.

First thing to do is probably talk to her first and get to know each other. A random guy she barely knew asking her to the movies would sound rather awkward in my opinion.
