[Disclaimer: If you are going to read this with a hardened mindset, then I would encourage you not to read it. THIS WILL BE A WASTE OF YOUR TIME. But if you are willing to consider the topics brought forth, and maybe ask questions later on, then I believe you might find profit and maybe even enjoyment in this topic.] First of all, I want this to be a friendly discussion. NOT a discussion where Christians bash others and vice versa. PLEASE DO NOT MAKE THIS A MISTAKE/WASTE OF TIME. Now that we have that taken care of I would like to ask the question: Why do Christians seem so demanding and intolerant? The answer to this question is actually quite simple. Consider this analogy: Lets say that you had information that led you to believe that a friend of yours was going to die based on something he/she does daily. What would you do? Well, I know that I would tell him/her that they needed to change. If you have a friend that smokes, does drugs, drinks etc. and you KNOW that its going to kill them, then you are going to try to get them to quite right? This is the mindset that Christians have. When we post stuff that says, Gay marriage is wrong... dont do it. or Abortion is bad. The woman doesnt have that right. or Sex before marriage is not good. Dont continue a relationship to that extent. We are not saying that stuff because we like to be mean and intolerant. But because we believe that tolerance is basically not telling someone they are going to die if they keep smoking etc. [Now before I continue on, I would like to say that I am not preaching in this next section. I am only further explaining the way we as Christians think and reason.] We truly believe that lifestyles against our beliefs are bad, not because we think we are so good, but because we know that God will judge every man for their own sins (wrongdoings). I hope that you now better understand that we (yes I am speaking for the Christian religion as a whole) arent a bunch of bullies that like telling people that they are going to go to Hell because they are bad. But that we are a people that act out of love. Not a mushy, weird love, but a brotherly (or sisterly) love. We do what we do because we are looking out for you and the rest of the world. Even though it may be hard to comprehend, TRUE Christians look out for whats best for others not whats best for themselves. Thanks for reading. If you have any questions or thoughts, PLEASE post them below. I would be more than happy to do my best to provide you with an answer (or just carry on a decent discussion ^_^)

That's great and all, but what if they believe that YOUR lifestyle is wrong? This is where your analogy goes wrong, because how many smokers say "No, smoking is good, you're wrong!".

you make a good point... but the idea of the analogy still stands. Let's say some kid WANTS to take drugs/smoke/drink. would that be ok to let them? I am not saying that your beliefs are irrelevant (that is another area of debate... could get messy... so we should probably stay away from that) I am just explaining WHY we as Christians say and do what we say and do. You'd be surprised at how many Christians are 100% sure that the Bible is true. It's hard to suppress enthusiasm when you (meaning a Christian) really truly believe that that person who is doing that bad thing is going to be punished without mercy for eternity.

All he is saying is that basically, a good christian has your best interests at heart. That is all well and good, but you need to learn when to keep it to yourself. No homosexual person wants to be told that their lifestyle is wrong and they are going to hell if they dont "repent." By watching out for what you perceive as their "best interests" you are doing more harm than good. In fact, that is basically the case every single time, except when you see a person of your own denomination doing themselves harm.

like i said in my last post... as a Christian, it is hard to suppress your beliefs or "keep it to yourself" when you TRULY believe that someone else is going to go to Hell for what they are living. How else are they going to be corrected? Would it be better to let someone live the way they want to live... and then go to Hell for it? (i am asking this in general... not necesarily in the realm of Christianity)

Pretty much what markedmask said. When it comes to alcohol, drugs and everything harmful - It really depends on what education a person has gotten on the type of thing. I myself am strongly against someone who smokes and does drugs (Alcohol - Not so much until it comes to the point where it does a lot of harm), but it really comes down to what the person who has put them in the situation thinks is right. They've got all the information about the effects of drugs, alcohol and cigarettes (Not true in some cases) and it comes down to them making the right decision. Edit: It's ok to give them a 'I strongly recommend you don't do it for your own physical and mental wellbeing and people you care about' but when it comes to things like homosexuality, you don't have the right to say that they can't do it because it is against what the bible says. Edit2: And I agree with below. You can't place a strict stereotype on someone. They aren't all demanding and Intolerant

For the love of God, /don't/ speak for a group in general. As a previous Christian, I'm dismayed by that action. That said, the argument that you would coax someone into changing a belief or style for their future benefit is plausible, but it's damned annoying when it's a constantly brought up issue. for the same reasons, plenty of athiests are annoying for constantly bashing religion, and ultimately, the best course is to give your two cents and shut up, at least in my opinion. imo, you're not doing anyone any favors here. and you're certainly not helping if you think you're saving people by trying to convert them. make the suggestion, but know when to let someone decide for themselves.

What i would like to say about Christians is this: "Any Christian who does not look out for the best interests of others is either not a Christian, or just completely disobeying what they are called to do." As a result... I believe that it is our DUTY as Christians to be "intolerant" not to the point where we act with chaos etc... but so that we don't accept people when they live their lives the way they want to. Everyone has the freedom to believe what they want. But as a Christian, I feel am called to at least try to correct others ("correct" meaning based on the Bible/Christianity as a whole)

How else are they going to be corrected? [/quote] You know, that is one of my fundamental problems with devoutly religious people. How can you believe you are correct? Why are you more correct than the hindu guy next to you, who believes just as completely that he is right? But that is off topic. Even if you truly believe that someone else is going to hell for the way they are living, why do you have the audacity to tell them that? This is a pretty educated world (most of us) live in. If someone is smoking a cigarette, they likely know it is pretty bad for them. If someone covets his neighbors wife, he knows the consequences, in this world, and the next (by his belief system, if applicable). If someone is homosexual, they know what the ignorant masses think. They know what the religious masses think. Especially with all the controversy over such subjects lately, they know Damn well what others think. What I am saying is that in this society, even if you are trying to help them by informing them about how they are doing wrong by your beliefs, you aren't telling them anything they dont know. They have been over it before, and have obviously come to their own conclusions and opinions.
