80% of the children at a holiday camp were boys and the rest are girls. LATER, 60 MORE GIRLS JOINED THE CAMP, THE TOTAL NO. OF girls became 60% of all the children. How many girls are there now? The answer is 72, but how do you get it? EDIT: Thanks sutper and Nonexistent for actually helping, I know now I also found how to do it by using units.

let x be the number of people in the beginning (0.20x+60)=(0.60)(x+60) 0.20x+60=0.60x+36 60-36=0.60x-0.20x 24=.40x 60=x Therefore there were 60 people in the camp to begin with. 12 girls and 48 boys. Add 60 girls= 72 girls of 120 people. Therefore 60%.

We know that there were 20% girls to begin with. When 60 girls were added, the percentage jumped to 60%. After toying with a few numbers and rations, concluded the following. In order to come from 20% to 60%, add a value equal to the larger side of the ratio to both sides of the proportion. Example. 20 : 100 = 20% 120 : 200 = 60% 36 : 180 = 20% 216 : 360 =60% After getting this information, I looked back at my proportions, I looked at them like this. .2X : X = 20% 1.2 X : 2X = 60% I know that .2X is the number of girls to start out with. That means that X is equal to 60 girls. If I multiply 60 by 1.2, I get 72. Solved! EDIT: Nevermind, listen to the person above me. Her way is way easier.
