One suggestion I've been thinking about: Star commenters.

A system in which new users cannot post. Now, we know the feedback rule might not be applicable anymore. Some people sign up for basilmarket just for the forums, and may never use the trading feature. However, the '30 days until full member' does not work well either. This simply limits new users, and bad people take advantage of it by making many accounts and planning to attack all in 30 days. It simply encourages bad behavior, and discourages activity on the site. Therefore, I propose a new feature. Mr. Basil, I don't know if you actually read these suggestions, and I don't know if you actually even read the forums, and I don't even know if you can figure out how to do this, but hear me out. Revision There are multiple parts to this system. The Goal Basically, the main idea is this: Because feedback and time on basil is not a good representation of the character of a poster, what is? Simply, their posts. That's basic. How do you measure posts? By the quality. How do you measure quality? By a human. Therefore, I propose this: The Main Idea When a new person signs up for the forums, they do not have any reeal posting priveleges. They go onto the chat sections, just for example. They want to post in the "I need help with my algebra homework" thread. They post a reply, but their post will not show up yet. A moderator then later logs on, sees that a new user has made his/her first post. He then goes, reviews it, no big deal, and then approves it if it contributes. What this does is simply gives the poster access to BASIC posting. You know how what we have now, when you sign up day one, you can only post two or three times a day? That is what the moderator will basically be giving. Then, this poster's posts will start showing up, however, they can only make one or two posts a day. More specifically... What happens now is where it gets tricky. In order for this poster to be able to get more posts a day, he must make more good posts, or posts that people like. The way I propse to do this is simple. Moderators will designate basilers whom they feel are responsible and good posters. Then, these posters will be given stars, or anything (a marking, a sign, a button, or anything) next to the [ONLINE] thing on their posts. What will this do? Simply, it will allow them to '+' a post. Basically, the user who is still in trial phase, who can only post once or twice a day, will have [TRIAL] next to his online name. When a star commenter sees someone with this, and sees he has made a good post, then the star commenter can push the '+' button. What this does is grants one more level of posting priveleges. Now, the newbie poster can make 5 posts a day, or something. Eventually, what happens is it builds up until maybe the poster gets 5 'approvals' by star commenters, he/she gets full posting like any of us. How do Star Commenters work, get their star, etc? Now, here comes the most important part: star commenters (or however it may work out). Basically, the idea is

there's cons to this. • people might make accounts to make themselves star commenters • said people will disapprove every post • said people will abuse it in other ways • people would flaunt their stars but it sounds cool.

You're on the right track, I'm liking this idea, except for the last part. Now, when I nooblet posts, and the star posters approve it, that shouldn't be the automatic activation of their account, and they can post freely, as someone could just as easily make a nice post about sunflowers and how much he likes life, get approved, then start a rampage of spam. It has to be tweaked around a bit, but it's a good start.

I'm trying to improve it a lot, this is just a first idea of mine. • perhaps then we will have to make it so moderators give out the stars, or a combination of moderators giving our stars, and star owners giving the 'I think this person made a good post' things • Simply make it so only star users can approve, and not be able to disapprove • Take out disapprove, less abuse. • Give it the benefit of the doubt. When a user is found doing so, then simply take their star away. This 'star' is not meant to be soething to be shown off. I think at moderators discretion, if someone is found abusing or showing it off, they can simply take it away. No need to be lenient about it. Thanks for the input, how do you think of it now?

Macaroni : I think they should get a small, non-ego boosting rank up. Any reward system on basil will just create more controversy. Not to mention a non-ego boosting rank is a complete oxymoron.

As convenient as this sounds.. I think it would be really difficult to pull off. If anything, posts by new basilers can be hidden until checked by moderators and then allowed if it's good.. and let them handle the stars only.. or those who get stars as well. Otherwise people could randomly take off the stars. I find building a system like this would be really hard.. despite how useful it seems.

I like what I'm hearing so far. Obviously, there's the standard "it could be abused" statement, but with enough fine-tuning, this idea could have a bright future. I'm up for almost anything. A system that is abused can always be revoked, in any case. I don't have any specific advice as of yet. I have no idea how it could be implemented, but that's mrbasil's problem, not mine >:3. Macaroni : This doesn't have to be a big deal. We can even make it so you can't tell who the star commenters are. It doesn't have to be public. There can always be the "Are YOU a Star Commenter?" threads that could pop up, which would kill the anonymous part of the program if people reveal that they are. It's basil, you know it could happen. :/

I'm going to keep revising it and changing it. Hopefully, mrbasil looks up from his busy schedule and gives it a look. I really think this can work. @Above There is a few things I would like to say about that. 1) There is nothing wrong with being proud of being a star commenter. It should be something users want to be, it's something for users to have a role model after. It means they will try to be on good behavior, so maybe one day they can get this too. That's why I like it. 2) If someone is SHOWING OFF their star, as in "hahahaha I have a star I can say whatever I want, I can do whatever I want, I am better than you" then you can simply revoke it. Report it, yeah? How's that?

The internet is a marvelous place, you will soon discover another website that is trolled as much as Basil is. This get's me thinking, it would be an honor to be a Star Commenter, but I would have to act more mature all the time, but I only like to be serious and mature in situations such like this, or other big discussions, other than that, I like to goof around, make lame posts, and otherwise not really contribute to the community or discussions. :/
