| Don't Be SHOCKED! Each night you before you go to sleep you take the safety of your electrical appliances for granted. You are at home on a typical Tuesday night after a stressful day at work. You turn on the television and flick through the channels to find a form of entertainment. As the night wears on, the temperature starts to drop so you turn on the heater with confidence. You may not know but there are silent killers right in front of you. The television. The heater. Every year 12,500 houses burn down from electrical faults. These electrical faults are caused by abnormal flows of current in the circuit. Professor S.M.D Johnson, a well acknowledged electrical engineerer in Australia says Electrical faults occur if there is a failure in insulation or a fault in the insulation.' Electricity is a silent killer, we cannot see it nor hear it so we need to prevent it before it happens. On the 22nd of April 1979, an old, vintage house built around 1940 was burnt down. This resulted in 3 deaths, a mother, Mrs Jamieson age 23 and her twin daughters Amy and Jessica aged 11 months. There was only one survivor from this horrific blaze. Mr Jamieson, the father and husband , said 'I still can't believe this happened. Everything was so perfect... now my heart is full guilt, being the only one that survived... I could've prevented it.' Those were the last words from Mr Jamieson. He no longer communicates with the media to talk about the house fire. The worst part is losing your loved ones. You can never bring them back to life. Santa-Marie Dockland, another victim of a house fire described her house as 'perfect, everything looked fine. We never imagined losing our house.' There were no signs of danger, detectives believe that the fire was caused by wires overheating in the entertainment room. The wire from the television caused a spark which quickly caught onto the curtains are spreading across the house like a rapid turmoil of destruction. All these incidents were avoidable. It only requires a steps to enhance the safety of your loved one. Professor S.M.D Johnson believes that the incidence which occurs is caused by carelessness. In an interview with him he provided advice that may help in the reduction of accidents or even death. � Have regular wiring inspection � Never place electric cords under rugs or bedding. Heat or sparks from these cords could cause fire � Follow the safety tips on new appliances. � Check electrical cords for signs of wear. Replace damaged cards to prevent shocks and fires. � Cover unused outlets with plastic plugs. These are only a few ways to lower the risk.
