Describe what it means to be a "function." Give equations of two non-functions and explain why these two examples are not functions. Help?

Function is where you have an equation where all y values have differnt x values. Certain x values, however, may have the same Y value. Function : X^2 Not a function. : X^(1/2) and -[X^(1/2)]

HolyMythosIf one value of X has more than one value of Y, then it is not a function. So, a graph of "~" would be a function, since every X value has only one Y value. However, a graph of "O" does not since at points, an X value has two Y values.

Use something called the vertical line test. If you can place a vertical line ANYWHERE on the graph in a way that it will intersect 2 points on the line, that is not a function. Otherwise, it is a function.

A function is described as a process where a x value is changed into a y value. X^2, X^(1/2) and -[X^(1/2)], are all functions. However, a one to one function is the only type that can be inversed as it only has one x value to one y value. This one to one function can be called a true function. Something that would not be a function would be f(x): 1. A function is what it sounds like, it has to function in order for the equation to be...an equation.
