Whats the point of Fame?

I don't get why so many people are obsessed with fame. Whats the point? The only point I found was you could get the medal and wear certain equips but that's all. If you know the real reason fame was put in the game and why people obsess over it when they get defamed, please tell me.

Well if you walk around with like a -27 fame, people tend to avoid you a bit, cuz there has to be a reason you were defamed so much. I defame people who are total jerks occasionally. That's all I use it for xD
