Please, I'm in a desperate situation!

My computer won't start up at all! It goes to one screen where the bar is rushing at the bottom and the whole screen is black. You know that startup screen? yeah, it's stuck there and won't continue. My problems started yesterday when Combat Arms wouldn't load even after patching! Nothing was opening and when it opened, it'd be really slow and then my whole screen would freeze and I would have to restart my computer. Well, today somehow, I can't manage to get back on! There were no error messages, I didn't download anything to get a virus, etc... Is there ANYTHING I can do short of wiping the hard drive? I have some important documents that I want saved on there... aka my writings and music. >.< Please help me! *BTW I'm using a laptop*

you sir, may have a dead motherboard. my laptop did this last year. took it to a repair shop and was told the motherboard died. had to pay $400 for a new one. i should have just bought a new laptop =[

Vista and... if I can't turn on the computer, how do I transfer? *If I get a new motherboard, will I have my files?*

Try starting your computer in "Safe Mode". Just BEFORE the Windows loading screen comes up, start pressing and releasing the F8 key. Don't "hold it down" but press it repeatedly. It should go into a menu that includes several "Bootup Options" including one that says "Safe Mode". (I'm not sure about Vista, but that's how previous versions of Windows worked. Try it.) "Safe Mode" will try to boot the computer using the "bare minimum" of features, and will not load all the extraneous garbage that Windows normally picks up as you use it. Hopefully whatever is causing the problem with your computer is software (it's unlikely to be a "dead motherboard"- if it was that, you likely wouldn't get ANYTHING on the screen). Safe Mode will also come up with a very basic video mode, so the colors will probably look all off, and the screen resolution will be reset to low resolution which means all the icons on the desktop will look huge. None of that matters. IF it boots up successfully in Safe Mode, you should be able to access your files and should be able to use a USB thumb drive to copy them somewhere else. Or store them on the thumb drive as a backup. Whatever. AFTER you manage to safely copy your files to another computer, I'd recommend trying a System Restore to a date you KNOW is sometime before the problems started. Hopefully that will "roll back" your computer to before whatever the failed game update may have done. I'd be careful about simply blaming a game update for this kind of serious failure though. If a System Restore helps recover the computer, the first thing I'd do after that would be to run BOTH a complete Anti-Virus scan AND an Anti-Spyware scan using the appropriate scanning programs. If you don't already have programs like that, (WHY NOT?), I use: "AVG Free" anti-virus and "Spybot Search and Destroy" anti-spyware. Other people use other programs, including "Malwarebytes" for anti-spyware. Just get something and USE IT. (Google the program names for download links.)

However, if you plan to just throw it away, make sure you put some scratches on it, because if someone finds it he might use your files.

ive had this problem before, there are three different things you should do 1st you should try to reinstall or recover your operating system, if it doesnt work, try airing out the computer and check your cpu, your thermal paste for the cpu may be old you may need to reapply some, or the heatsink is loosened. Then try reinstalling your operating system. The error probabaly occured after an update that was "recommended" on windows update. i almost guarentee you that the motherboard is not dead.

THIS. and 3 really helpful programs that you might find useful would be CCleaner, Speedfan, and Malwarebytes all 3 of these are free

yea, try booting in safe mode, then running chkdsk, if it fix it, try running malwarebytes, or combofix... if none of that works... your HD might be dying... I had to happen to my laptop... had to swap out the hd... just borrow a portable enclosure from a friend and transfer all your docs over

I've actually had a computer that managed to get to the XP loading screen like 3 times with a dead motherboard. The motherboard must not have been fully dead or something, but yeah, it would rarely actually boot for a second.
