32bit and 64bit?

my mom is buying me a laptop for school stuff and after looking at best buy, and im wondering whats the difference between 32bit and 64 bit? and also whats sp1,sp2? and what kind of laptop should i get? $500-$600 budget

Rafa652 : Over 17,000,000,000 GB of RAM. Edit: To be exact, "16 exabytes = 17 179 869 184 gigabytes" is what Google Calculator tells me. That's the theoretical limit though. Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit has a maximum support for 128 GB. But still, 16 Exabytes. Yum.

sushikiller : WRONG. People have reported that 32bit vista recognized 4gb ram before, and it recognized 3.25 gb (for me before) while others read up to 2.75gb ram. And by the way, there is a way to break that limit by disabling the LBA in your OS for ram. LBA comes in default as enabled with your OS. Also, the amount of ram also depends on your motherboard with certain intel chipsets as well and from which manufacturer. HENCE I said "roughly", I'm aware that there are slight deviations below or above 3. Regarding chipset, my budget $80 nForce 4 motherboard from 2005 can address up to 16GB (the actual amount usable is determined by the OS anywho), it's a complete non-issue. sushikiller : Therefore, if you're those lucky ones, good motherboard + 32bit vista may recognize up to 4gig. Bodysnatchers : I don't really know how to explain it, but 64bit is a faster processor. 32bit can only read up to 3GB ram. Vista home premium can read up 16GB of ram. sp1 & sp2 are service packs. In sp2 they patched up some of the bugs and make it more user friendly. Still, I recommend waiting until windows 7 comes out so that way your computer is optimized for it. 32-bit can read up to like 3.5 GB, but not the full 4. 64-bit can read more than 4GB, even as much as 128 GB. Vista Home Premium can read more than 4 GB as long as it's 64-bit.

64bit system easier, I'm using windows 7 x64 and vista ultimate x64 with NO problems with compatibility issues, Apart from some minor programs that won't work on windows 7 due to it's being new. 32bit can use up to 4GB or ram, 3.5GB physical memory and 0.5GB for graphics card and such. While 64bit is recommended for system using above 4GB of RAM also it takes advantage of multi-core processors. Overall x64 bit will give a higher benchmark. Edit: For those people keep saying "it has compatible issues" on 64bit system then state them!. Like I've said I'd like to test them out as I've got no problems when using it.
