my dad decided to show me some old music he used to listen to. mostly stuff I knew about but didn't expect that he listened to, knowing him. stairway to heaven (led zeppelin of course), michael jackson, beatles, things like that. classics, as we all know. one thing that struck me is the lyrics. i dont neccessarily think music is any less musical than it was 20, 30, 40 years ago. one thing I did notice though, is lyrics nowadays are way different. this struck me most with stairway to heaven. the lyrics in these songs are deep and meaningful, and they are also simple and catchy. nowadays most music is dumb. it's always about love or drugs or something, i mean i could probably write a blink 182 song by asking a 13 year old to describe what their crush looks like and putting it to music. what's with that? i just don't get it. I mean, michael jackson was pop, but does that mean his lyrics had to be dumb and shallow? personally I like gorillaz and coldplay. sure they are not that original, but I like them for not only the music but the lyrics. they aren't all about love or generic teenage angst or whatever. i mean, there is hope. it's just kind of like looking at the library of wii games : a few good ones in a sea of crapware.

you do realize Led Zeppelin wrote a lot of songs about drugs and sex and blink-182 write meaningful songs too? "Stairway to Heaven" is just insanely obscure in meaning.

Well, honestly these days, I only listen for some insane double bass. Been listening to The Legend of the Rent is Way Hardcore for a bit now.

NumbFeet : WHO DOESNT LOVE CHER i'm asking the TS but okay, do you believe in life after love? hmmm well you like Coldplay and "Yellow" is a lovely little love song, kinda simple and sappy but that's what love songs are supposed to be. I don't want some overly wrought thing I have to decode to understand.
