How do you ask for a haircut?

Like, people use numbers and inches around the head or some fidoodles. I used to just pick out of the book, but how do you ask for a haircut like above?

Thinned and layered please, especially the top. And take an inch off the back and sides. Shorten the bangs a bit too please. The person that I go to to get my hair cut knows how I like it now though. =P

If its just a trim: "I'd like to get my hair trimmed a bit, in layers. (if trimming bangs) Make sure to keep its ragged edge." <---I have cool mostly even, but ragged bangs. :D If its a whole new haircut(I like anime haircuts :D): "There's this picture in this manga book -whips out picture- and I would like this. (and/or) cont. <--- I would like it like that, but not so short/not as long."

well what do you want? 4 all around 3 all around? 4 on top 3 on the sides maybe a fade and a line up? you want stripes? the numbers are how long your hair will be in CM

Thin it out, and my mom tells me to say "notch the bangs", so they don't look perfectly straight across. Such a girly term, but whatever.

My hair's too thick, and it's getting too long, keep the bangs kind of long and everything else you can cut down a lot.
