Most girls have prob engaged in "Self play" as you put it. By the time most boys and girls reach puperty they become curious. Even if they dont fully understand what their doing, its natural for boys/girls to..you know..play with themselves a bit. Aka exploring their body. Of course, most people dont want to admit it.
