It's late, and I guess I don't have anyone really to talk to. Everyone I've tried to tell, keep saying "You knew him in middle school, it's been ages since you've last talked to him, and it's not like you didn't see it coming." It's true. I knew Chris for the two years I went to The American International School of Doha. Ninth grade was the last time I saw him, and he was a bright sunny kid. Brilliant honors student. Then his father was diagnosed with cancer and they moved back to the States. For the next few years, I focused on high school and then university and pretty much forgot this friend of mine. His father died earlier this year and then Chris got sick. When I heard, I wanted to contact them somehow, but I was convinced they wouldn't remember me. And to be honest, I was too preoccupied with my own life to take the time to hunt for the contact info of an old, neglected friend. Cancer is one of those diseases that eats its victim away so slowly that people often forget they are dying. I thought I had time. And I kept pushing it back - the idea of the awkward email that I should have sent. Yesterday, after a long, painful battle with cancer, Chris passed away. He was 20 years old. It's so hard to believe that someone so young, someone I share so much in common with is dead. I have not talked to him in almost 5 years, but the thing that saddens me the most is that every day of those years I could have reached out and said something. And I never did. I don't know why I'm sharing this, but I just needed to get it out.

It feels like you are empty, right? I'm reminiscing on my friend's death right now. My condolences.

takeyb0y2 : How did you find out? My dad used to work with his dad, and I guess the news spread around the company. He called me earlier tonight.

Sad, I know a kid named Conner, he has cancer, he's only 13, but he was lucky, and they caught it early...
