Do I smell corruption?

o_o. I just recently though about something. The users of basil can go and report anyone they find guilty of breaking the rules, but can't they also report people for fake things? I've seen a couple people complaining about bans, and the moderators saying that banning people is just a pain, and they really don't enjoy doing it... So perhaps the moderators are getting lazy? Maybe when a ticket comes up for a report, they just relentlessly ban people, because they are too lazy to look through the ban message. But probably not :]

We would hope that the moderators are discerning enough to know which posts break the rules... And even if someone is wrongly suspended, they always have the option of reporting it to mrbasil and having it lifted..

I wouldn't say it's corrupt in general even though technically it is potentially.

They have to manually sieve through the reports and do background checks so they can justify what they've done is right. It's potentially one of the worst jobs ever, under constant scrutiny and no pay.

Let's say a comment is reported. Here's what I do: • Check reports. • Check for swearing, insults, racism, etc. • Check thread the post was made. • Check relevance of post. • See if this particular post deserves to be suspended. • Read the Topic-Thread to make sure it's OK too. • Read a few of the posts around the reported's post, see if he was quoted and insulted, commented on, etc. • Check User's suspension history. • Decide a suspension length based on previous offences. • Ban. • Move on to the next report. This process repeats itself for a while until I'm done with the reports. I also sometimes do this: • Browse Basil • Receive PM • Open PM • Read about how a user was suspended for a perfectly legit reason. • Read the insults the user included. • lol • Report PM. • lol again Chain of command. It's potentially one of the worst jobs ever, under constant scrutiny and no pay.

See that, for every report you make, the mods have to go through 10 gruelling stages of work to satisfy it. Doesn't that just want to make you report? xD MUFA PAWEI - Moderator's union for actual pay and working environment improvements.
