You talk to Meren, and the quest should be titled like "Meren's Second Lesson" or something. He'll ask you to make an Intermediate Monster Crystal 1 for him. So, you go gather 100 etc drops from a monster between level 71 and 80. Open your Maker Skill window and craft the crystal. Talk to Meren and turn it in. HERE'S THE CATCH: You may have to turn in multiple crystals. It's random, but most likely he will refuse the crystal (but take it anyway). It took me 7 tries before he accepted it, and it took my brother 2 tries. So, good luck with it, it can get pretty annoying. An easy 71 to 80 monster to fight is Homunculus for its etc drops. Just go fight those until he gives you Level 2.
