The Androgynous Guide to Gender Misconceptions.

Hello! My name's Lexi . And my character is a guy. Seems obvious, doesnt it? SoWhy am I saying this? Because there are many misconceptions about gender done every day, many that have been made towards me. As Ive played Maplestory more and more, I have gone through many different cycles of taste ranging from looking more masculine to more feminine in my outfits. As you may be able to see now, its much more Masculine than saya few of my looks shown here (photobucket) . In-game, I have been told I am a "Goddess!" and a "Unique Woman!" all too often. (Compliments...?) Not to mention misconceptions even in threads on Basil. And I don't blame anyone for those mistakes. You shouldn't have to memorize hairs/etc to know someones gender. But you should at least know the most common misconceptions, with not-so common thrown in. Or at least have some sort of reference so you can say at least you tried. Which brings me to this guide. Do you like this guide? If you do, give it a thumbs up! Table of Contents Androgynous and You Common Misconceptions Hair Concepts for Both Genders Eyebrows Tops The Big Cover Sunglasses The Inevitable Conversation Credits and References Androgynous and You Androgynous is a term that means neither male nor female. Or appearance wise, anyways. Or you could say a little of both . People may exploit this with hairs normally not seen, common hairs that look alike with both genders, Tops and bottoms that are not gender oriented, tops that go below the male or female "underwear", and much more. How does this affect me? Well lets say you're going to do a z-run and you call the leader a very hot woman. It's probably all cool until it hits you that that woman is a man. Guess who isn't getting helmed? Unlikely? Maybe. Possible? Probably. Not to mention the awkwardness of saying "Ohh and what's her name?" to your new male friend on your first meeting. Which I have to say, has happened to 90% of us in maple at least once. I think I've seen you before. "Idk dude but she was cute...oh hey she's wearing my overall" In Maplestory there are many hairs that cater to both the male and female variety, with the same concept. Which, obviously, will lead to mistakes. It's only human to stereotype a gender by what you've grown up with, i.e. pink = girl, short = guy, long = girl. Especially with pixels. Not like you can see the specifics of a male or female via pixels. But there are two hairs specifically that have the most subtle differences and cause the mass amount of Misconceptions. There are subtle differences in hair styles that share concepts through genders. They aren't HUGE, but recognizing these differences can save you a lot of time and awkward happenings. Common Mistake 1 - Metrosexual & Caspia (photobucket) Metrosexual & Caspia W/ a Hat : here (photobucket) . As you can see, the hairs look a lot alike. This is probably the biggest yet simplest Gender Misconception. Now let's say you aren't an expert with eyes, and the top hides the bott

I read it allllll Nice guide! I love androgynous looks both inside and outside of MapleStory, haha. I think a lot of misconceptions are just because people don't stare hard enough though.. or maybe it's just me. I stare hard. :s Like your friend with the female dreamcatcher + bikini, I got asked if I was a guy a lot when I had that hair too, and I was wearing that frilly little top with the pink ribbon. o.o

@cotton; Thank youuu! And Tifa was all around amazing, they shouldn't assume you're a guy because you noticed her amazingness ;~; @Available; Thank you! I love Androgynous looks as well, mostly in real life because most male clothes are extremely too large for me ahaha. And you're right, if you REALLLLY look at any look, you should be able to tell their gender. But if you're new or you've never seen certain things, no one can blame you.

People call my char a girl all the time, and won't believe that it's male until I equip a male bathrobe. >_> |

This needs to be stickied. Seriously. Though I noticed male face 4 was missing from the section with the faces. Might want to put that in there. A+ guide.

@Ctrl; I hate when they make you take off all your NX so they canactually see for themselves that you're a boy/girl it's so demeening. @Luzz; Yes, I did repost it! As I said at the bottom of the guide, I wrote this guide months ago just as a reference for anyone who needed it and one for even myself, but for some reason it was deleted along with a lot of older threads. I wouldn't usually repost it, but if it can help people who haven't seen it yet or people who have seen it but missed it, then it has done it's job. @azn; Thank you! And yeah...I do use maplesim to make things like the examples you can may have seen in this guide and things like that, but I was never able to edit them and get them all transparent and stuff for avatars, so I just had to go and buy the outfits and make the character look the way I wanted for basil, and then I had to wait hours until the ranks updated to update my look ahahaha. @Logic; Thank you! And sorry for your eyes. @Slow; Ahaha I don't know how to respond to this other than "yaibet" . @Clement; Thank you! I would hope that it would get stickied if enough people really used it, but if not at least it helps slightly. And oh wow, I actually hadn't noticed that mistake :o thanks for telling me, I'll fix it now.

Oh nice, finally a guide on letting people know how to tell them apart... it's elementary really, but a lot of people just don't take the effort to distinguish between the two. Same as the people that don't try to figure out what has accidentally been censored.

@Dragon; I apologize for your eyes and yeah, I know it seems silly but people do make those mistakes quite often D: and thank you! @Luzz; Ohh yeahhhh! Thank you for reminding me! I remember you even made a little picture that I used in it as well I made a new one since I couldn't find it though. @Elventine; I know :/ , conceptionally speaking it's pretty simple and obvious. But I can't blame anyone for mistaking the genders in a pixelated game that's animation caters mostly to the feminine taste ahaha. Is there anything else that you feel should be shortened, added, edited, or anything of that sort? I really appreciate all feedback .
