First anime...could be Initial D or Slam Dunk. Best for me was Death Note =) Watching Higurashi right now.

Also, although it is not old: There is a new anime called Umineko no Naku koro ni, which is sort of like Higurashi. Same makers and all. You guys might be interested. Its up to episode 4 as of now. :D
