Are extractions absolutely necessary? What is the off chance that they're not? Also, do braces hurt and why?

Yea, they try to make you THINK the shots work. It's all in your mind. You still feel it anyways.

i got 4 tooth extracted for my braces... needle for aesthetic=just a bit of pressure when the liquid comes in ur gum... Food= anything after 2-4 weeks... can resume almost normal eating habits

Oh crud, even having the dentist to rip out a tooth attached to a thin line of my gum hurt.

I don't see why they say you can't eat sugar. I eat sweets ALL THE TIME. Nothing bad happens. And usually when they pull out your teeth it's quick but painful. Better than slow and painful in my opinion. Don't be worried. You'll learn to love your braces when you get them. I love mines :P.

Extractions are sometimes necessary because when your teeth go back in to place, they approximate/assume that once they move back, not all the teeth are going to fit nicely in to the row, so they take one or two out. I had 3 baby teeth extracted and this other tooth, though I think I have all my teeth...maybe one is missed somewhere, not sure. Braces don't hurt, but they make your gums sore. When you bite down on something when it's sore though, THAT'S when it hurts. The pain got to me once where I just refused to eat...I couldnt' even close my mouth with teeth touching each other because that'd hurt too. Overall, you get used to it, and when you get it tightened, it'll be sore for 1 or 2 days, but that's usually what happens. As for the whole numbing thing, it differs from person to person as to how their body reacts to the chemicals. I can't exactly say I was fully numb during the thing, but I didn't feel any pain.

It's worse with wisdom teeth because the needle is bigger and actually leaves a bruise. But that's not the bad part, the bad part is, if you start panicking, you may just alter the effects of the anesthesia on you.

Well, coming from someone with braces currently (getting them off in November, yay), they don't hurt unless you get them tightened, which is usually once a month. After that, you can eat what ever you want for a day (recommended: A LOT OF FOOD), but for the next two days or so you'll be hurting like no tomorrow when trying to bite. It's like a pulling sensation. To your question of teeth removal: It's only necessesary if the orthodontist says so before putting on braces. Usually you get the braces on and go at it for about a year. If anything changes, then they will inform you on the need for extractions, but it's not often that you need them before you get braces. A few tips: • ALWAYS BRUSH YOUR TEETH! I can't stress it enough. You don't want a stain like I'm probably going to get... I need to brush more. • Wear the headgear as often as instructed, and then some more. If you don't you'll only prolong the amount of time needed to fix the teeth and get the braces removed. • If it comes down to wearing the rubber bands, don't take them out often. Learn to adapt to eating with them in. Again, wear them as much as possible. • Take a few IB Prophen or what ever pain killer medicine you use after tightening. Even though you have a day before they start to hurt, getting in a few killers will often shorten the time that it hurts, meaning it'll be easier to chew. • If you have to get extractions somewhere along the line, don't worry too much. You'll get the sleeping gas which feels insanly awesome, and numbing needles so you don't feel a thing... litterly. I had two removed. If you have a fear of needles like I do, just close your eyes and try to go to sleep. It'll make it go a whole lot faster. And if you get one top one removed, then usually it's the same one on the other side of the top (same for bottom). Either that or just a solo tooth removed, but that'd seem a bit weird. • BRUSH YOUR TEETH! If you're getting braces in the near future, good luck and hold it out. The end result is worth the adventure. Skalz: I'm dreading when I have to get my wisdom teeth removed from what I hear from everyone else. I heard it's going to be a major pain in the ass and hurt like hell let loose... the retainer too. O_O That seems like it'll be a pain. :| I have this odd tendency to "click" with my tongue by pushing it to the roof of my mouth and pulling using suction to create an extremely loud noise but I fear the ability will be taken away with the retainer.

depends if you're doctor wants you to, for me i had two removed on the top. the bottom was fine, so i didn't have to remove any. my brother didn't need to take any teeth out, and his was just as worse as mines

Gotta remember to wear your retainer! (total hypocrite right here LOL) --edit to your edit-- Wisdom teeth ARE a pain. I had all 4 taken out at the same time. First of all, before the operation, definitely do not panic and stay calm or if you're going to panic, panic until they inject you, because they take your blood pressure before they inject, and if it changes, it may alter how effective the anesthesia is. I was panicing the entire way through, so I was fine :D LOL I remember waking up from the "operation" though...I was half awake and smashing against walls because I was so dazed, with cotton stuffed in my mouth and blood gushing out. I went home and fell asleep with the cotton in my mouth, woke up, ran to the washroom sink and started spitting out the blood while my dad, who found out I was awake, gave me the botton the dentist told me to put in my mouth. It was disgusting. Following those days, I couldn't eat much...or at all, for that matter. So I just kept chugging juice and sleeping since I was so exhausted. So, 2 days before the operation (because you're not allowed to eat the day before), go out with your family or something and indulge yourself. Because you're going to be losing weight for a good while. I used to do that with my retainer lol...except I'm one of those people who got lazy/inconsistent in putting it on...except my teeth are still fine (don't follow my way, it's bad). The only crooked teeth I have is at the bottom, and that's because my 2 wisdoms teeths at the bottom started forcing it out.

Braces will only hurt during the first week put on. EXTRACTION HURT LIKE A MOTHER FUUUUU- Then your face looks dead after cause of the injection.

Don't listen to him. The braces won't hurt for long once you get them on. The REAL painful part are the spacers you get in before the braces. Those'll require lots of pain killers... Extractions don't hurt though. It's a fun experience action. You'll be "high" under the laughing gas (doesn't cause you to laugh, sadly) and you won't feel a thing a few minutes in. Your face won't be "dead" per say, but it'll be numb for quite a few hours.
