 | Why do people get angry when other people use the term "Gay" for stupid. IMO people shouldn't get angry when someone says "that's so gay". It's common slang. It's like getting angry at people for saying "I owned you" or "OMG you just got rhaped!". All of the examples aren't what the words actually means but slang evolved their meanings. A lot of people i know that whine about the usage of gay go ahead and use "own" or "rhape". And for all the people who justify the anger by calling it offensive to gays, what about using the term own. Isn't that offensive to the slaves? Or isn't the use of rhape to mean "beat really bad" offensive to sexual abuse victims? |

| I remember like 3 to 4 years ago, gay was one of the best disses. Everyone would be like 'shut up you're gay!' and then the other guy would go 'no you're gay!' |

Heck, I use that term in that connotation myself, I even joke about it with my friends, in which I do something very retarded (yet funny) and my friend says, "You're so GAY!" and I respond with "24/7 baby". I never found the offense of it. I mean if someone tried to offend me by calling me gay, like literally, I'd just laugh. I don't even care if they call me [cigarettes], but it's obviously wrong on their part to use a derogatory term. @032193sid I use "that's so asian" and "you're so white" all the time. LOL... There's derogatory terms, and then there's just words taken out of context. Gay isn't derogatory, [cigarette] is." maybe you dont take offence when people describe something negative as 'gay' but there are many others that do take offence. As a sidenote, the use of the word retarded is also derogatory on your part |

There's the question of what matters more, the intention or the result. You could have good intentions, but by a twist of fate, end up with a bad result. Then are you good or bad? At the same time, my intentions aren't meant to offend anyone, and my use of vocabulary has pretty much sustained itself over the course of 5 years. I can't look over every single thing I say since everything has some other meaning, and anyone can very well take any sentence I make and take it out of context. Would their twisting thus mean what I'm saying? No, it shouldn't, for that isn't my intent. If I honestly offended someone, I'd apologize, but I'd find it rather unreasonable if they can't understand my intent - just being lighthearted. |

One of the main reason some people take offence when people use retarded or gay to describe something stupid that they did is because indirectly you are saying that only a gay or retarded person would do the stupid thing that I did. I know most of us use these words unconciously, i just want you to know what you are implementing the next time you use these words. |

(Probably should've added this in to my previous comment) See, gay is an actual group of people. It's not a derogatory term. Retard, on the other hand, is a derogatory term, so to say a "retarded person would do the stupid thing I did" would then be wrong, for who are the retarded people you are referring to? In which case, people made the assumption thus that it's the connection to the people who suffer from horrible twists of fate. You can use that example for a gay person, for there are actually gay people, and then if used in that context, you're saying those people are under such connotation. But to use that example for retard would falter, for it is that assumption which people make and link thus to people who are mentally challenged. For me, I never refer to such people as "retards" because it's derogatory, alike [cigarttes] and [N word] and [Biscuits], etc. The, more polite or accepted term would be mentally challenged or handicapped or mentally handicapped. So if you were to compare using the term "gay" in that context, you then wouldn't be saying "retard", you'd say someone was "mentally handicapped". |

| Because the term gay use to be used as something to mean happy by older generations. So this generation took it and turned gay into a term that means stupid or dumb. It is a form of rebelling against their parents and so on to call stuff gay and mean the opposite of its original meaning. Also just to add to this because I noticed posters talking about it like it is a reference to homosexuals and it isn't. No one goes around saying that is homosexual in a negative use. Gay was adopted by the homosexual community because it means happy. Like what I said above this generation also adopted the word to reverse the meaning of happy into something that is the opposite. |
