My Friend Was Fired, Do You Believe This Was Fair?

My friend was laid off from McDonalds today, and while getting laid off is a part of job experience and everything, I, along with him, found it to be for an unfair reason. This is his letter to his lawyer: Today I was "laid off" by one of my managers at work because of my hair being too long and refusing to cut it. I told the main manager about my situation of wanting it to grow longer and I will be willing to tie it up so that it does not reach the collar. The main manager said she would consult with the owner of the restaurant and see how things lead from there. However, the manager that told me off did not like that response and told me not to work if I didn't get my hair cut. So things escalated, and we went to the office to talk. I was emotionally assaulted by how he uses his words saying - "I don't want a someone who looks like a [female dog] to be on my crew, someone who is NOT a human being. I want my crew to be sharp." At first I did not think he was actually serious, and I was taking it as a joke, however he did say he was serious and I was extremely offended by that statement. Is there anything in regards to law that I can lay charges on his verbal insults or anything that can help me out because I refuse to take this sort of insult from someone. Is the manager justified in his reason to lay off my friend? What are your thoughts? Before you make an assumption, my friend is a heterosexual male who is growing out his hair so he could get it cut to a different style than what he has now. He's been working there for a year. (If you say it's fair for he should cut his hair, then what do you say about girls then?) • McDonalds is too cheap to buy hairnets. I don't know why this is of concern , but for those who have never had a job before, especially around this time of recession, getting employed is not as easy as one may believe to be. McDonalds is always hiring and usually people always gets hired. If I could willy-nilly choose whichever job I want, and my friend included in this choice, I would HAVE a job and he wouldnt' be working at mcdonalds. So before anyone here starts saying how McDonald's is worthless or whatnot, it's still INCOME and it's not GETTING MONEY OFF YOUR MOMMY AND DADDY.

What I believe is that people should be fired if they're not doing the job right. But if it's getting fired on looks and calling him a female dog, that's pretty harsh. @above: Well the manager didn't seem to say that having long hair was a problem. He said that it was ugly or something like that. :S

Cut the dam hair keep the job, don't cut it lose it. It's a very simple choice.

Plain and simple..their business, their rules. I had a similar situation with my hair as well but i just cut and same with my piercings, i have to put it studs when i work.

I see this as fair as it is your choice to work at that place or not. If there is a set standard for hygiene, like short hair and you choose not to comply with the rule then you choose to no longer work at that place.
