| So today, I log to Maplestory, and try to HPQ for the elusive titanium receiver. All of a sudden, I get whispered by a random person. He says "Hey, I am a gm, sir." Now I see that his name is supposedly "BellocanHIM". He then asks me that he has received "multiple reports of me spamming others". Well, I say, "OK, maybe it's my macro that makes me spam". Now, he actually falls for this, and says "well sir, I am asking for your help." I say, "What do you want me to do?" knowing it's a fake already. "Hand over your username, password, and pin. Now you maybe wondering why, but I just need to look over your chat log." After this, it was obvious to me that this wasn't a real GM, as they wouldn't ask for your info. I search him then, and I see that he is on Maple Island. "Shouldn't GMs not be able to be searched? And why are you in Maple Island?" (yeah, I messed up my grammar on this one ). He replies after like 2 minutes: "Not they can sir. GMs can go back to Maple Island" (lolwhut?) rather shakily. I know this was a scam from the start, but I decide to play along, maybe have some fun while I'm at it. I take his name from the whisperbox (it automatically saves name of the last person who whispered you), and copy and paste it to check if his name is actually spelled right. And what do you know, it shows up as BeIIocanHlM. Wow, that's a dead giveaway. I whisper him back saying: "There are 2 ii's in your name instead of 2 ll's." "2 ll's sir." I say "Just a sec, GM." After thinking for a while for another way to disprove him as a scammer, I come up with a genius way to expose him. "Let me see you in Maple Messenger." Yeah, that would have been awesome to see the expression on the scammer's face. He would be like, "Oh shi(take mushrooms)!" But alas, he logged off after he saw that I was too smart for him, probably to make another fake account to scam another person. Summary A supposed GM named BeIIocanHlM whispered me, saying he received many reports of me spamming. He asks for access to my chat log, and he says he can only do that with my account info. I track him, and he is in maple island. Then I copy his name and paste it into Firefox <3, and see that he is obviously using i and l interchangeably to make it look like his name has Bellocan in it. I see him as a fraud, and he logs off, probably thinking, "I would have gotten away with it if it weren't for you meddling kid!" But in the end he wins, wasting almost half an hour of my life . The moral of the story is... Beware of people who whisper you pretending to be a GM. If they have any I's or L's in their names, they are probably a fake. Especially if your server has I's or L's in it. Try to search them by using /find (insert scammer's name). If you can track them, they aren't a GM. Never ever give out your account info even if the "GM" asks you so they can check. And finally, use common sense. Also, if someone calls you sir every time they talk, they are probably fakes trying to suck up to you. Special |
