Converting from a 32-bit architecture to a 64-bit architectu

What steps would I need to do through when converting my desktop computer from 32-bit to 64-bit? Do i just need to change my 32-bit CPU to a 64-bit one?

Well to Change to 64-bit you would need a compatible processor and a motherboard to go with the processor, also you would need windows Vista/XP 64 bit edition.

Nope, you need to format your computer and reinstall your OS. Assuming you have a more recent CPU, you will have an x86-64 cpu which is what you want, if its fairly old, you may need a new one.

guys im not talking about the OS, Linux has me covered. Im only asking about the hardware stuff.

1. Hardware needs to be 64-bit compatible, This includes the Processor and the Motherboard. (Most CPUs are, its the Motherboard you need to watch) 2. The Motherboard has to support 4GB of RAM. You need 4GB of memory or more to run a 64-bit computer. (Again, check the motherboard) 3. Assuming you have a 64-bit copy of Windows, you are good to go.

If youre CPU is x86-64, then chances are your motherboard will be fine. You do NOT need 4GB of ram to run a 64-bit OS. Were that the case, I could not run the Windows 7 RC on my laptop which only has 3GBs, which I am doing right now.

You don't need 4GB of ram to run a 64-bit OS, you need a 64-bit OS to use 4GB of ram As long as your hardware is compatible, which most new parts probably are, and you actually have a disc to install a 64-bit OS, you should be fine
