Perception of depth

I've been wondering about this for a while... maybe you basilers can help me ^_^. Okay well, most people can understand that a movie is made out of A LOT of images, shown rapidly with small changes each picture to animate it. Now, with that in mind, think about how our brains work the same way, we constantly process even more 2D images, with every movement we make we see things from a new angle, thus creating the effect of a 3D world that our brains can understand. What i don't understand, is how we perceive things to be a certain distance away. I understand, If i stand a meter away from a mirror and look at my reflection, it will appear to be a meter away from the mirrors reflective surface. This is because the light has too travel twice as much distance. First to us, then to the mirror and then back to us again. We know that on a train or fast moving vehicle, tree's in the distance seem to pass slower then those close to us, do our brains use this to work out how far something is? Then why can i tell things from a 2D photograph, which is non-moving? Please basil, enlighten me

Shadows. Also, we have two eyes. That's depth perception.

Two eyes, shadows and things in a distance also appear to be smaller than things that are closer.

sellswordyeah we have something called stereoscopic vision. In other words, we see from 2 different points, and for approximately 3 degrees, our vision overlaps. This way we get 2 sides of the same thing, so we are able to tell depth and whatnot.
