Right now i'm a senior in high school with a sister that's a sophomore in UCR, my dad told me that with my sister loans being more expensive and that my mother is now unemployed, that he wouldn't have enough money to take me to an UC or a CAL State and I'll have to go the local community college (which I hate with a passion). Any ideas on affording a real college? I'm thinking about being financially independent in college, is that possible? . Also, I tried and failed at getting my own job.

LiveGreenwhat's wrong with community colleges? people get the idea "oh it's a COMMUNITY college" and think negatively, with absolutely no other reason and if you seriously gave up on getting a job, good luck in life

Just get student loans, see about grants/scholarships, get a job. Isn't that what most people do? o_o.

Apply for mad scholarships. There are all sorts of little scholarships and grants you can get if you just apply and maybe interview for them. Also, you should be getting some financial aid (not a lot since it's a big state school) but still some. Plus apply for FAFSA (financial aid from the government in the form of grants and very repayable loans). College is expensive but you can still do all you can. Plus you'd probably have to get a job to cover the rest that your parents won't be able to.

unluckily for you they're cutting back on CalGrants, they tend to increase the aid you get if your family is paying for two college educations, you could try filing as an independent and see if the government feels sorry enough to help you out or not.
