8400M GS Heat Problem.

Hi. I"m using a Dell XPS m1330. Specs are 2.14 GHZ Processor, 4GB Ram. 15.4 LCD widescreen. 300GB HD and of course an 8400M GS video card.(nvidia) Everytime i run maplestory and play for maybe 10-15 minutes my GPU heats up to around 90c-100c. well thats what the HW Monitor says. I'm not sure why it gets so hot. Ive read that its the die/package material set but everybody that has the same problem never even surpasses 80c. Wondering if anybody has any help on cooling it down so i don't burn out my Motherboard >.>. I have a cooling pad.always on AC adapter(maybe thats why?) and not sure about the version of my driver. 175.97 or something of the sort. Bios A15. any help would be appreciated.

If you have it plugged in all the time, take out the battery. That usually release ALOT of heat soooo im sure it will help abit Just make sure the fans on the bottom is not blocked

Get a compress air can from the store, open up the bottom of your case, and blow out the dust that is in there. Make sure you get around the small openings. Don't be cheap and decide to use an vacuum cleaner. It build up static electricity and can kill your laptop.

My Dell Inspiron 1525 also overheats. Turns out its only this model that has a major overheating problem -_-. I guess it is with yours also. Lesson Learned: Dells arent good for gaming (Atleast the one that I have)

The 8400 GS and 8400M both have the same problem with temps, but it's usually the cause of dust buildup. You need to clean the dust of of your card every so often. Once I cleaned out mine,(after 3 years of never doing so) the temp never exceeded 70c.

Get compressed air, open it up, then MAKE SURE you go somewhere away from carpet, to avoid static, then just shoot the dust out of there, it will improve performance considerably (and fix heat). MAINLY GO FOR WHEREEVER AIR IS RELEASED OR TAKEN IN!

Maybe you could do the copper mod. If you're good with computer, some people on notebookreview.com are selling the tiny sheets of copper you need for the copper mod. All information and materials for doing the mod are available at notebookreview.com. Just go to the dell section then to the XPS section. You'll need a thin sheet of copper and some arctic silver five. Most people on the forums says it makes a difference. You'll be putting the copper and arctic silver five between the heat sink and processor. It normally comes with the crappy thermal pad, not even any thermal compound on it. Also, you can download i8kfangui (google it) and with that you can control the speed of your fans. Good luck. By the way, if your screen is 15.4 inches, it's a XPS m1530. The m1330 is the 13 inch version of your laptop.

Just so you know, all ( if not most ) G84 and G86 ( that means both desktop and mobile chips ) based chips are defective and will wear out and die faster than normal, this includes both your 8400mGS AND my 8600mGT . Overheating will become commonplace to you. I have often seen my GPU hit 100C+ and once I saw it go as high as 120C.

I just did the copper mod today and gonna wait to check temps until the AS5 cures. And to whomever said 13inch monitor u sure? My gf has a macbook I tho was 15in and mine is slightly bigger. To compressed air I heard it can dmg ur cpu. Also is it possible t get a different video card?

Macs are in general smaller and thinner than most other laptops. If you have the M1330, you have a 13.3" screen. The M1530 has the 15.4" screen. Also, no you can not get a new GPU. The 8400mGS is soldered onto you systems motherboard, and the only thing you could do is get a new motherboard with a different GPU ( which would have to fit your chassis ), or get a whole new system.
