I would imagine it has something to do with conventional, societal, heterosexual privacy from the opposite gender.

It's nerve racking enough for me to change pads in the girl's washroom. I don't need a guy sharing the same bathroom. Likewise, if it was highschool, I'd probably kill the guy.
