Why do people (including myself :P) say it so many times. I can't figure it out. O.o

It's a silence filler. My LA teacher endlessly pokes fun at the person that does it in her class, which is why I say it less now.

It's called a verbal pause, look it up.

People tend to be careful with their statements, that's why they put 'like' in the sentence that way they try to bring people to the same understanding or level I think

My English teacher got me started on this. Whenever somebody would say "like", he would comment by saying "Was he like that, or was he that?" (Just an example)

We like say the word like, because it's like something that we're just like used to. You know what I like mean?
