I personally change it up every time. I prefer to improvise with my excuses. It's a lot more fun that way, and it is slightly more challenging.

I usually try to think up something that would really make them feel guilty. Like I once told my mom I didn't want to go to this place with her and her boyfriend because I believed she was passively trying to get me to replace my father with her boyfriend, and I would never allow that to happen. Honestly I couldn't give a crap who she dates, but it worked and I had the afternoon to celebrate.
