Hey Basil. It's been quite a while since I started a thread. (: Anyway, I'm gonna start taking guitar lessons this summer, and I'm pretty much starting from scratch. I have no guitar, no case, no pick, and no knowledge of how to play properly. I used to play piano, though i wasn't great at it, and i took theory rudiments for a while, so i do have a musical base. So, do you guys have any tips on playing, what price of guitar would be best for a beginner like me, and any experiences, etc? Thanks Y'all, you're awesome.

Get used to having very callused fingers. >.< I can't give any advice, I quit early on. Good luck, though.

Huh, I'm pretty much in the same place as you are right now. Except I'm self-learning and not taking lessons. Also I already bought one. =P

Get ready to dish out some MOOLAH! Expect to spend around 300 for everything if you plan on sticking around for while.

Practice a bunch. Get tabs off of ultimate-guitar.com They have all the popular songs that you'll HAVE to play, otherwise you're going to get extremely bored playing scales all summer. and eBay your very first guitar. I got my first one for $190, amp included, but i'm left-handed and those darn idiots always make left-handed guitars more expensive.

KingEvilPastFenders make good guitars for beginners. Really good and affordable. You might want to look into them. if you're talking about acoustic... hmm.... there might be a local maker in your area. Look around for a bit. @Above Really? I always thought they were the same. Mmm... @Below Having individual attention on your weaknesses is better than a screen. Also, posture and position.

Been playing for a year now and my fingers aren't calloused. As for tips, practice a lot, don't rely on tabs only, and learn scales before chords.

I'm left-handed, but I don't play left-handed guitars, don't know why though. Anyways my very first guitar was from one of those all-in one packages. I got it for around 400$, amp included. Get a package those are good for starters.

It's great to start with acoustic guitars. I started with a Fender Starcaster acoustic, thick strings and harder to press down the fretboard. Great practice for strength in barred chords and your fingers. Learn your scales.. and don't just get into anything like Nirvana, Guns 'n Roses, and other stuff too early. You don't want to get into bad habits. Just work on slowly and move up to that slowly. I got my Fender Starcaster acoustic guitar for about one hundred fifty dollars.

I hate when people talk about guitar when they don't know anything. (EDIT: When I saw this thread it seemed so) I've played for eleven years, and worked at Guitar Center for four years. First tip: Never EVER buy a Fender guitar. Most useless thing in the world. If you want an acoustic, I recommend a Taylor guitar. Though, you are just starting, Taylor is a hefty price tag. If you want an acoustic, search for a Martin&Co. acoustic. You can get an amazing quality for around $440. If you are going for an electric, I am assuming you will play rock/metal. Best low priced guitar I can think of, that I recommend to everyone starting out, is a Dean Vendetta. Get the plain black one because it is about a hundred bucks cheaper. Get a Monster brand cable, and a small Line 6 amp, and you should be set-up for learning to play. Also, I recommend not using ultimate-guitar for tabs, because it limits your creativity. You can use ultimate-guitar for guides though, since it is useful for pinch harmonics, sweep picking, tremollo picking, etc. Happy playing! :D

Starting off when you were younger and didn't really care about left handed or right handed. Teachers that didn't teach lefties. @Above Really? A professional guitarist recommended me get one if I wanted to start off. Guess he was bsing me.
