| Okay, so does eating not enough calories gain weight? I did some calculators and it said that a 14 year old male, 130lbs, 5'5'', burns 1555 calories from just sitting around. I eat about 1500 calories a day and exercise I'd say... averagely. I stopped losing weight and I am stuck at 130lbs, it also says I need 2200 calories to maintain my weight. Is there more to weight loss than just calories? It also said I need 1800 at least to lose weight, but doesn't that mean 300 more a day meaning 2100 more a week? So how is this weight loss if I am intaking more? Please help, I'm confused and I think my body is eating at my muscles, I wanna try eat more but I don't wanna gain 10 pounds because I'm wrong. So do I eat more...or keep eating the same...or just add exercise to my diet which will cause even more caloric loss meaning more caloric deficit and cause my body to go eat at my muscles even more? |

I'm sure you already know, but I'll just reiterate on the overtraining part; don't weightlift every day. It's bad. Period. And have you ever considered swapping your 2 hour jog with a simple 15 minute session of HIIT? You'll burn at least 2x the amount of calories you would by jogging. @TS, I'm around 125 lbs and I need to intake 1450 calories to lose 1 lb a week. I'm just speculating, but I'd say you need 1700 calories, give or take. |

| And yes, all the calculators say I need 2000 to maintain my weight with light activity. I eat 1500, meaning 500 less + the exercise calories = too many lost calories to maintain muscle mass. |

You know the whole story about protiens and carbs right? @above; re-read my 1st post on page 2, I added something else to the bottom. |

| I would help, but I'm not sure how to convert calories into kilojoules (which we use in Australia). |

| If you dont get enough, your body stocks up whatever it can and if you keep at it, it'll eventually eat away at your muscles for energy :D but its not just calories, its also iron intake and everything else my pro-tip to you is, stop worrying micromanagement for your body wont change anything, just ENJOY THE MOMENT! or ask dimo DX |

Okay, before you do anything else, let's inform you about nutrients. After weight lifting, your body needs protiens to allow proper muscle repair. I won't confuse you with all that mumbo-jumbo, but just remember, eat protiens after pumping the iron. Preferably whey. For your cardio, do not, and I mean do not exercise for more than 1 hour if you're planning to build muscle mass. Although cardio kickstarts your body's metabolism to burn calories, there is a certain point where your body is unable to function solely off of carbohydrates and fat, so it switches to the glucose stored in your muscle tissue, which would result in muscle deterioration. Instead of long, dull cardio, try HIIT for a few weeks. Let me know on the results if you decide to! To perform HIIT, or high intensity interval training, you must (as the name implys) undergo intervals of vigorous anerobic activity and controlled cardio. As an example of what I do... Sprint 90~100% effort for 30 seconds Jog 40~60% effort for 1 minute Rinse and repeat for a total of 15 minutes. Since you're just starting, its okay to modify the workout to suit your current physical fitness. If 30 seconds isn't long enough, increase the time and/or shorten the resting periods. The basic principle is to increase and lower your heart rate, which causes your body to go through a state of panic and rest, revving your metabolism for up to 24 hours after working out. |
