in stickied slinger guide i see that it is suggested to max flamethrower but not ice splitter. i've asked this a few times but never gotten an answer, sorry for asking again, but since outlaws/sairs use ice WAY more often than flame, why is it suggested to max flame instead of ice? are there are some training monsters that are really weak to flame or something? what'm i missing?
starwolf 06/05/09 + PM | QUOTE | PERMALINK | REPORT
I'm 99% if not 100% sure you didn't ask this before... Also, the guide is slightly outdated but it can't be updated because of the word TorP3D0. It can't be edited by Tackeback3r. Reason for maxing Flamethrower instead of Ice Splitter is simply because Flamethrower does more damage. If both skills are maxed, Flamethrower would do 160% and Ice Splitter 130%. Then i didn't count in the afterburn effect. Only reason you use Ice Splitter past 3rd job (or for some even in the 3rd job) is to freeze monsters.

IMO Ice is way better, as you pretty much won't train anywhere else other then skele/newts on 12x+. It's required to have freeze there instead of fire I guess :l

@furysin: that's what i thought! @starwolf: i asked in a few of my other threads, but i guess it got buried by other comments. regardless, your comments make sense up to a point. i guess my follow-up questions is -- how frequently do you use flame as an attack skill? because if you rarely ever use it, then i'd rather have the extra % in a skill that i will use frequently (ice). just seems more logical no?

It's pretty situational. It mainly depends on the map i train in at the moment. Before, i was using it every now and then at the Skelegons whenever i felt like i could 'combo' in a Flamethrower. But now i have a decent level Torped0 and i can 2 hit with Cannon, so i'm not using it anymore. At the Nightshadows for example, i do use it whenever i see a mob of 4+ together. I'm also using it when i need to kill lower level monsters like Bubbelings when i was looking for a Maple Shield. Only thing i'm going to add is this. Ice Splitter's damage is worse compared to Flamethrower, and you can't jump with Torped0. If you need to jump and mob in a certain map (Like Nightshadows) it's only common sense to use Flamethrower. But after 120 it sort of loses it's function because the damage is just overshadowed by your 4th job attacks. If you want to train with Flamethrower and Ice Splitter in the 3rd job, max Flamethrower because it simply does more damage. If not, max Ice Splitter so you can do a whole 200 more damage at level 150+.

Ice splitter is not for damage...you just need it to freeze up to 6 monsters. Max flamethrower helps at nightshadows.

That build he lists isn't very good, I was looking at the corsair portion and it made me ew. FireBurner is 100% useless, I never use it once on my corsair. Just max ice splitter as there's nothing else to put points in, it's more useful than anything else.

I use ice right now, and ever since I put 1 point in it at 7x-8x I have been using it. It's a useful skill not really meant for damage.

THIS IS WHAT EVERYONE IS FORGETTING TO MENTION. There is no need for the extra 200ish damage from ice when flamethrower makes up for it in the situations where it's useful. Also, at level 26(which ice should stay at if you go that route), you will still freeze the exact same way as you would with it maxed. IF you do not plan to use flamethrower, then don't max it. The guy arguing that flamethrower is helpful is trying to take the other side in the argument for knowledge purposes. It's to help your decision, not to say anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot.

At some point, Ice splitter starts add just damage and not freeze time or number of monsters hit. This is when you stop. Much like a Sniper's blizzard.

FroznSolidimaalex said: " fire is pointless since ice freezes monsters ur ship wont take dmg when mobbing and u get a skill tat replaces fire at 120 tat single mob cannon thing" yes, at 120 you get a skill that replaces fire. But do you get a skill that replaces fire in 3rd job? a strong mobbing skill? No. . At that rate, don't max invisi shot, burst fire + every attack you get aftward pwns it (even ice/fire on mobs of 3+ monsters i think). Why max burstfire/DS, when you get cannon in 4th? mrme40 said: "That build he lists isn't very good, I was looking at the corsair portion and it made me ew. While i agree there shoudl be a diversity of builds, fire burner is useful. Unless you enjoy newtie sniping for 30+ lv's, Fire Burner makes training more enjoyable, giving you the versatility to train in a variety of locations. You can also jump & use it, you can't jump and use torp. muffinator said: " I don't understand why it even lists Fire as a skill to max. Fire, however, is meant for damage. with its DoT and ability to alternate with ice, frankly put, fire gives you a powerful mobbing skill that ice/burst fire cannot offer in 3rd job. btw if you don't max fire, you put the points into gaviota, bringing it from lv 15->lv 30. That's a 25% increase in damage (proportionately, not literally), whereas if you do max gaviota, fire at 11 is useless. im sure even max ice can outdamage it at that lv. But if you keep gaviota at 15 (where its purpose is still forfilled), max fire is actually a useable skill . EDIT: by the last part, i meant if you choose to keep fire at 11. If you use fire at lv 26 alternating with max ice, that's just stupid. max fire would give more damage when alternated with 26 ice.

Just maxing it once on your (i'm guessing leeched) Corsair at level 120+ and then saying it's useless makes no sense. But that is what i guess the people who critisised Flamethrower did. If you used it in your 3rd job with a capsule you could easily see how usefull it was. Obviously, a mob attack that outdamages Burst Fire is a usefull skill to your arsenal. It even allowed me to train at gobys in an efficient way. *Points at video on my basilID* Keep in mind i was lagging like crazy in that video, i never got hit there without fraps active. All i was doing in this topic was explain to the topic starter why you should get 30 Flamethrower instead of 30 Ice Splitter. If you want to complain about Flamethrower being useless you can start a new topic about it. But in here, your posts count as pointless and off-topic spam.
