Why do we lock up suicidal people?

Like people who try to suicide but either fail at it (refer to marilyn manson thread) or get stopped before they do it. Why do we lock them up, wouldnt that just make them want to kill themselves and hate life even more?

We want to make them functioning parts of society that give back at least part of how much they've received. Why else?

Well, as said above, they try to intregrate them back into society, and many of them really do. And as also been mentioned, seeing as they failed to take their own life, they could possibly do something that could harm people more than just emotionally. No one likes to be locked up, but after it's done, they may be more thankful for their life.

Well I have a friend who's mentally ill mother locked him in a boiler room when he was 4 years old. She then attempted suicide outside. When she failed and the police got there, she was sent to jail. During a lunch break when they had something that needed to be cut with a knife, she stole a plastic knife and had someone tie her down to slit her throat. Terrible story. [Directed towards the person who asked how someone could kill themselves in jail.]
