Point of this thread is to help resolve some misunderstandings here about Linux. "Mainstream" Apps Try mainstream (without quotes) alternatives to your contemporary Windows software: Internet Explorer ~> Firefox Microsoft Office ~> OpenOffice Photoshop ~> GIMP Illustrator ~>Inkscape, Synfig InDesign ~> Scribus Acrobat ~> OOo Writer Flash ~> Synfig, NodeBox, OpenLaszlo Dreamweaver ~> Quanta Plus, KompoZer, Aptana, Mozilla SeaMonkey AfterEffects ~> Jahshaka Premiere ~> Cinelerra, Blender SoundBooth ~> Qtractor, Audacity, SoX Games Either get a console, try online games or use these: link WINE my help you but not always

I know about the open source alternatives, but the same can't be said for the games I play and stuff.

However, if you play games of any sort (excluding browser-based and flash) then you're out of luck

Linux is good but still not good enough to enter the "mainstream" public imo. Internet Explorer --> Firefox No problem with that. This change is ok cause FF is actually better than IE therefor people are willing to change even when they are on windows. Adobe CS3 --> GIMP. Please dont bring this up again. They are very different have a very different UI. Simply put GIMP can never replace Photoshop for me at this point. Also its not just Photoshop how bout InDesign, and Flash? Maybe those aren't as mainstream so they dont count? Microsoft Office --> OpenOffice. I tried open office before but i didnt like it as i loved the Ribbon on Office. Open Office doesn't have that. And if i use open office i will have to save as a Word document everytime which is pretty annoying. Plus if i do that i may even mess up the document (Personal experience and friend of mine also experienced this hence he is running 07 under WINE). However the good points about Linux specifically Unbuntu as that is the one i've tried the most is that: -It is Free -Ext4 is just blazing fast -more and more apps being supported. -Driver support is pretty amazing (apart from printers) -Lightweight and does not reqyure much power to run -Perfect for Netbooks. I am not here trying to bash Linux. just saying that those programs cannot replace the windows ones. games. How are you going to replace CoD4 or warcraft III with random Flash games? If i get a console to play games then it basically means i spent money for Linux. Totally destroys one of it's main advantages.
