Whenever I can't sleep I do math equations

HolyMythosMore specifically, I lay in bed trying to find out equations for something I normally wouldn't use an equation for. For example, just now while trying to sleep I thought of this: N^2 = (N-1)^2 + (2N-1) Pick a number, it works. Let's use 7. 7^2 = (7-1)^2 + (2(7)-1) 49 = 6^2 + (14-1) 49 = 36 + 13 49 = 49 I don't know why I think of this, I just do. It's how I fall asleep. Does anyone else ever do this, or am I just crazy?

HolyMythosI don't know why I do it, or even how I get to thinking about it. No one in their right mind would even use this. All it tells you is that if you know the square of one number, you can find the square of the next number by adding (2N-1) to the square. How I figure this out I have no idea.

High school calc AB/BC are both calculus 1. High school calculus BC is just a faster pace and covers more material than high school calculus AB.

For N^2 = (N-1)^2 + (2N-1) you DO use an equation... the expansion of (a-b)^2 which equals a^2 - 2ab + b^2. Fool. Plus you didnt even need the second part (2N -1) in brackets at all, youre just adding them to the general equation anyway.

(a-b)^2 does equal a^2 - 2ab + b^2, HOWEVER in my equation I never once have (a-b)^2. I have (a-1)^2. Fool.

Sigh, "a" and "b" are just pronumerals that represent any value. In your case, "a" is "a" and "b" is "1". So we do: a^2 - 2ab + b^2, and then we sub in the values a and 1: a^2 - 2a + 1

N^2 = (N-1)^2 + (2N-1) N^2=[(N^2)-(2N)+1] + 2N-1 N^2=N^2-2N+2N+1-1 N^2=N^2 So pretty much what you're doing is a quadratic minus the part that's not ax^2 to get to the original number squared...
